----------------------------------------------------------

1. Installing the SEL-5010

----------------------------------------------------------

* Hardware and Operating System Requirements

- 800 MHz or faster processor

- Windows NT4 SP3 or later with 64 MB RAM

- Windows 2000, Windows XP with 256 MB RAM

- Windows Vista with 512 MB RAM

- 150 MB hard disk space for installation

- EIA-232 serial port

- (optional) Ethernet card for Telnet and FTP

- CD-ROM drive for installation

- VGA 800 x 600 or higher resolution monitor

- mouse or other pointing device

* Upgrading Prior SEL-5010 Versions

It is recommended that you backup your existing

SEL-5010 database prior to installing the latest

version. In addition, if your database is on a LAN

you may want to copy it to a local hard disk,

then connect to it using the old SEL-5010 prior to

running the new SEL-5010. If you elect to update

your old database, the update is much faster when

performed on a local database vs. a networked

database.

* Upgrading SEL-5010 Version 1.x or 2.0

If you are using an earlier version of the SEL-5010,

the setup program will attempt to detect your previous

database. When the SEL-5010 is first run after

installation it will ask if you want to import

Setting Schemes and Connection (Dial) Directory

entries from your old database. Select Yes to import

your previous data into the SEL-5010 database. It

will also allow you to import users and options.

It is possible to import Settings and Connections

from any version of the SEL-5010 database.

* Upgrading SEL-5010 Version 2.0.5

You may install the SEL-5010 over 2.0.5 without

uninstalling version 2.0.5. The setup program will

not replace your SEL50102.MDB database, so your

connections and settings will not be lost. You will

need to import your connections and setting schemes

into the new database.

* Upgrading SEL-5010 Version 2.2.x through 3.5.4

IMPORTANT: After installing and running the SEL-5010

you will not be able to use the database with 2.4.x or

older version of the program. If you need to use the

database with an older version SEL-5010, or if you

share the database with other users who use an older

SEL-5010 you must make a copy of your database prior

to running this new version.

It is highly recommended that you backup your

existing SEL-5010 database and uninstall your current

version of the SEL-5010 before installing the latest

version. Installing the latest version without

uninstalling your earlier version may result in a

loss of data.

* Upgrading SEL-5010 Version 3.5.5 or later

Normally, you may install the latest version without

uninstalling earlier versions. When you first run

the SEL-5010 it will update your previous database to

the latest format. Alternately, you may choose not

to update your current database and instead use the

newest database, then import your connections and

settings into the new database.

* Logging In to the SEL-5010

You will initially be logged in as user "Admin",

no password. This user has full access. You should

give this user a password using Options | Change

Password; or add a new Administrative user then

delete the "Admin" user to prohibit unauthorized

access to the SEL-5010 software and database.

----------------------------------------------------------

2. Installation Problems

----------------------------------------------------------

* Installing with old SEL-5601 Analytic Assistant

If you have version 1.2 or newer of the SEL-5601,

this does not apply to you.

You should install the SEL-5601 version 1.1.2 software

prior to installing the SEL-5010. This SEL-5601 uses

some older system files, and may replace the newer

files required by the SEL-5010.

If you inadvertently install the SEL-5601 version 1.1.2

software after installing the SEL-5010, you may need

to re-install the SEL-5010. Re-installing the SEL-5010

will not over-write your database.

----------------------------------------------------------

3. Demo Version Limitations

----------------------------------------------------------

* Demo mode does not permit you to add new Connection

directory entries if there are more than 9 entries.

* Demo mode opens the database in exclusive mode.

This disables sharing the database with other users.

* Demo mode is limited to saving four events in the

Auto Event Report Collection form.

* Import and Export features are disabled.

----------------------------------------------------------

4. PC Port Communications

----------------------------------------------------------

PC Comm port parameters are set differently for modem

and non-modem ports. If you don't have a modem

connected to a port, and the port is used for

SEL-5010 communications (such as to connect to relays

via an SEL-2020), set the port parameters from the

Connect to Relay form, PC Serial Port tab. First

select the port number and then the port parameters

on this tab.

If you have a modem connected to a PC port, from the

Connect to Relay form, select the PC Serial Port tab,

then click the Modem... button in the lower right

corner. The Edit Port/Modem Settings form will open.

Select your modem from the list. The default

Hayes, Compatible 9600 should work for most users.

Click on the Port Settings tab and select the port

number and port parameters for your modem connection.

These settings will be used when you select a modem

as the first remote device for a connection.

Port settings are saved in the SEL5010.INI file,

in your Local Application Data directory.

If you are using a laptop and it has an infrared port,

be sure to disable the infrared port so that it will not

interfere with communications.

Telnet communications requires that your Microsoft

Windows® operating system have network support.

Consult your Windows documentation for details.

----------------------------------------------------------

5. Database Repair

----------------------------------------------------------

If your SEL-5010 database becomes damaged you can

attempt to repair it using the REPAIRDB.EXE utility.

Damage may occur due to a PC power failure or abnormal

exit from the program. You'll find the utility in the

application's directory.

----------------------------------------------------------

6. General Information

----------------------------------------------------------

This release does not support the Windows 'Large Fonts'

option. Use of this option will cause the text to overflow

on many of the SEL-5010 controls. This setting is found in

Display Properties on the Settings tab. Select a Font size

of Normal.

* 1 Amp version of Database

A 1 amp version of the database is included on the

SEL-5010 CD. The file is named SEL5010436_1A.MDB. Copy
