In Great Expectation, by Charles Dickens, the character of Pip finds himself pulled into conflict about his direction in life fairly early on in the story due to the “Great Expectations” that are thrust upon him. Pips conflict has many sides, such as the promise of fortunes and the possibility of gentlemanly hood, it also however take Pip away from what he knows and his family, to which he will never be able to return.

Pips conflict starts early on in the novel due to the “great Expectation” he is pushed into. These expectations cause conflict within Pip about his future and the promise the expectations bring, and the change in him and his surrounding these expectations will cause. This conflict shows as pip leaves his boyhood home to receive his expectation in London. “I had been so innocent and little there, an all beyond was so unknown and great…” (159) Pips transition in this causes conflict because it take him from the knows, to the “unknown and great” (159)

Pips conflict resolves itself after much turmoil and strife when he arrives back home to the place he grew up, which was a comforting place for him. This return to home signifies that, in the end, he has resolved and made the decision to return to what he knows, and his previous way of life, rather than the life in London of “Great Expectation” Pip shows his resolve when he returns to Satis house. “And in that moment there was a shadow of never leaving her” (732) this shows his resolve to abandon the expectations thrust upon him, and the source of all his conflicts, and stay with what he knows and loves

Pips conflict is not only a conflict on the surface, but has a much deeper meaning after analysis. Pips internal conflict, and his decision to ultimately go with the people and place he loves gives us the deeper moral of the story. This moral, to not allow fame, money, or “expectations” come between the people, things, and places we love, shows us that it is important to keep those we love nearby and with us at all times.

Pips conflicts many sides, to stay or to go, its ultimate resolution, and the deeper meaning of the importance of the people and places we love shows us the true meaning of the entire work as a story of turmoil, strife, love, hatred, death, and ultimately, expectations.
