Beowulf: Good versus Evil

Written sometime between the 8th and 11th century, Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic poem where revenge and violence take huge place in it, and how good and evil are a constant conflict throughout this poem. How Beowulf fights evil with violence being the only alternative because of the fact that it took place in the 8th century and education wasn’t as popular at that time, and violence and war was their only way of communicating. The conflict between good and evil will always come into life even today. In this case Beowulf is portrayed as ‘good’ in this poem, he is the hero and the one who is the center of attention in this story, on the other hand, Grendel and Grendel’s mother are the definition of evil, and we see how their evilness expands throughout the story too. Good and evil are not only expressed in the characters of the poem but also the ambiance and when it takes place and everything that goes under ‘Evil’.

Throughout the poem we encounter with violence at the beginning we see how Grendel this vicious and evil creature that decides to attack Hrothgar’s Mead-Hall, this is the first act of violence we see in this epic poem. Grendel who is represented as Satan, an evil creature whose only purpose is to destroy anything in its way. A creature that fights Beowulf,
