Not only the religious element was crucial to the foundation of colonial monasteries by different religious orders, but also there was the desire to protect women. That is why in these construction where very used stone and wood.

Convents are a legacy of colonial times. Currently remain some that still stand and have been used as Schools, Boarding Schools and Hospitals. Today only remain as religious site for nuns and priests.

Image Analysis: Cristo de Mayo

• Theme: Cristo de Mayo

• Autor: Pedro de Figueroa

• It was ordered to bring by: Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer (La Quintrala).

• Current Location: San Agustín Church at Santiago.

Importance of what it shows: it’s a figure that was crafted by the priest Pedro de Figueroa.

There is a myth about this sculpture that says that this sculpture gave a look to the Quintrala and she decided to throw it to the window. And priest took it to the cathedral till that moment the sculpture was called “Señor de la Agonía”.

In May 1647 there was a big earthquake in Santiago that brought down almost the whole city but at the cathedral the sculpture remained intact only the thorn crown was hanging from its neck. The bishop Gaspar the Villaroel tried to remove it but at in that moment there was a replica of earthquake, after that they tried to remove it again but there was another earthquake. So they decided to leave the crown where it was. Since then the sculpture is called “Cristo de Mayo”.

Reflexion…

The Colonial Heritage helps us understand the past how life was, the style of the buildings, the Cristianism, the art of the past, what they like, and the architecture.

It's amazing to know that in our city there are still many things that were created many years ago and are part of our culture. Many times you go to church or walk the streets without knowing that all this was created in colonial times.

Moreover we learned about the materials of the colonialism and how we inherit cultural and social things from different times.
