Etienne Lenoir

Etienne Lenoir was the inventor of the first internal combustion functional engine, according to the University of Nottingham that mentions "Unfortunately, the engine of Lenoir does not reach the initial expectations and dropped suddenly its popularity. This was in part due to the problematic ignition system, but primarily to the high consumption of the gas, an expensive product in these days, in addition, the quantity of cooling water required was considerable and the heat generated was so great, that, unless the bearings are lubricated constantly, the engine would not work. "

Nikolaus August Otto was born on 14 June 1832 in Holzhausen, Germany. At the age of sixteen he worked as salesman of trade on the German side of the Belgian and French border. It was when he worked a salesman that he heard about the gas engine, invented by Etienne Lenoir, Otto thought that the engine may have more uses and that could work with liquid fuel. Otto invented a carburetor for this engine and working on this idea he wanted to improve its performance.

In May of 1876, Otto built the first four-stroke piston cycle internal combustion engine. This was the first practical alternative to the steam engine, in the next ten years, more than 30,000 engines have been sold, this engine was the prototype for combustion engines that have been built, and this engine was called the "cycle of Otto" in his honor. The layout engine consists of a piston which compresses and is based on a mixture of air-gas within a cylinder. This process permits an internal explosion.

Gottlieb Daimler built an very light engine, this is a photograph Otto using the attached form and one light engine to a bicycle. This became the first motorcycle of the world.

Karl Benz built his first three-wheeled car that uses the engine of Otto. Daimler also built a car, using the engine of Otto. The companies of Daimler and Benz merged into the manufacture of the famous Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the engineer franco-swiss Francois Isaac de Rivaz had already designed, like many others, several automobiles driven by water vapor. But the innovative spirit of De Rivaz was never satisfied, and he began to develop an internal combustion engine, as opposed to the external combustion proper of the machines driven by water vapor.

On 30 January 1807 in Paris he obtained the patent No. 731 by his invention, which employed the force of controlled explosions of combustible substances, rather than water vapor, to promote different machines, it was so slow, bulky and noisy that the French Academy of Sciences said as prophesy that the internal combustion engine could never compete with the well-known and tested steam engine.
