Good morning ladies. As our opponent team, you see monarchy as an anachronism, something useless, undemocratic and not important, but we don’t agree with this way of thinking. You said that it is not a valid institution for the 21st century, that it is too expensive, the monarch doesn’t have any real power and that it doesn’t provide any valid advantage to a country, but let me tell you that that’s not true. We firmly believe that it is a valid institution and a part of England’s history. We support that the building blocks of Great Britain had been shaped by the ideals and actions of the crown and that it is an integral part of the country’s national identity. And I’m here to give you reasons that prove this.
As our first speaker stated, monarchy has been and still is a valid institution that has the ability to improve the nation’s economic situation. Your team said that it is too expensive and that their money should be used for something social or more relevant, so It is important for you to know that the royal family’s work and effort, gives more than 1.4 billion pounds a year to charity, which is an activity they have as an almost-full time job with organizations as the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, helping schools, hospitals, countries with great needs and other foundations. It is true that Buckingham Palace opens just a part of summer but, attractions related to the monarchy that contain must of their treasures as The Tower of London, Windsor Castle, Hampton Court and the Kensington palace which is also the residency of the duke and duchess of Cambridge, bring around 500 million pounds a year to England, since tourists are interested in learning about the history of this country that still has the treasure of monarchy as their form of government. Finally, as she also said, the high status of the royal family allows them to build strong relations with other powerful or wealthy countries, which provides more economic and commercial opportunities.
In relation to the political advantages that our second speaker mentioned, monarchy is a respected and a lifetime position that provides a sense of unity and stability. Since a monarch is a non-partisan ruler, they don’t need to please people in order to be elected, and they are able to focus on running their country thinking long term and not short term as politicians do. A president has to develop a government plan of 4 or 5 years, while a monarch is able to achieve more since they dedicate their whole lives to develop their role. Royals have the opportunity of building stable and longer connections with other governments, unlike in a presidential government, where relationships can be affected by a change in presidency. Additionally, unlike politicians who have a short period of preparation, future Kings or Queens are trained emotionally, physically and mentally from a short age to improve their capacity as rulers and to fulfill their duties in the best way possible.
Our last speaker argued about how monarchy has been representing the country over centuries and became an essential part of its culture. Having this institution as their form of government, avoids society to divide into political parties, which allows the country to remain united and to be more powerful. Your speaker exposed that the population its forced to like the monarch but let me tell you that recent statistics presented by the English newspaper, The Independent, affirm that 76% of England’s population, agree with their monarch and don’t want their country to change for a republic. The royal family is seen as a symbol for the country, and it is respected and appreciated for the British people. As our speaker stated, we could see this when the Queen celebrated the Diamond Jubilee, where people attended to show gratitude and support to their ruler. We affirm that monarchy gives identity to Great Britain, it provides something different to the country and it is a cultural symbol that makes it unique.
