The Necklace is an amazing short story written by Guy de Maupassant. It expresses until which point someone can get in terms of admiration of wealth. People always want more and more. They are never comfortable with themselves neither with what they have. In the story, Mathilde wasn’t comfy with herself at all. She wanted to have jewels, fine clothes, more shoes, purses, and all the stuff needed to be fashionable. She thought if she didn’t have all those things, she was not going to be accepted by people. She wasted her money buying a fine dress because she didn’t wanted to look poor among a lot of rich women. She was going to do the impossible to look stunning in the evening reception at the Ministerial Mansion. Mathilde was almost ready for her event, until she noticed she needed some jewelry to be perfect. She asked Mme. Forestier to lend her a beautiful diamond necklace and then she will be good enough for society.

I think the author was trying to tell its readers that the physical part is nothing compared to the inside of someone. You could look like a barbie, but on the inside you are a killer. Appearances are deceptive.

“A human being - what is a human being? Everything and nothing. Through the power of thought it can mirror everything it experiences. Through memory and knowledge it becomes a microcosm, carrying the world within itself. A mirror of things, a mirror of facts. Each human being becomes a little universe within the universe!” -Guy de Maupassant.
