MOVIE ESSAY "V FOR VENDETTA"

By Ana Karen BO

This story is developed in the future in London. The government that they had in those days is not that different from nowadays: they have this undemocratic government and all the people live scared of them.

If we analyze our present we can realize that we also live afraid of the government but they should be afraid of its citizens.

In the movie, V uses Scarlet Carson, a type of red flowers. These types of flowers are supposedly extinct and V uses them as a signature or evidence about the acts and killings he's been doing as a retribution for Larkhill.

Evey Hammond reflects an independent and innocent women, she works as a puppet for a TV government chain, watching the injustice in all the country without doing anything.

One day she was walking down the street in prohibited hours. V, a vigilante saved her from the "fingermen", who was going to kill her for breaking the curfew law.

He took her into his house and during a whole year she was taught to be brave, to have confidence in herself, to fight for her justice and defend her points of view, and the most important: she was taught to become fearless.

As I said before, most of the people were afraid of the government. This fear was created because the government wanted to have absolute power and control in all their citizens, and the government did not wanted them to initiate a revolution against them.

During the movie we can see that the main purpose of social media was to introduce false ideas to their citizens and persuade them to believe in them. This media wanted to blind their viewers so they (the media people) could make evil acts of injustice.

V starts his vendetta or revenge exploiting the Parliament and the Big Bang the 5th of November. This was an act of rebellion because he was against the government’s ideas, and, as I also said before; he was doing all of this as a retribution for Larkhill.

There was a part in the movie where Evey gets incarcerated. She was tortured so she could say the truth about where V was hiding.

During these days she found a letter; it was an autobiography written in toilet paper. This was about a girl that was incarcerated for being lesbian and in the letter she showed Evey that she must keep her sanity and always keep in mind her ideas, objectives, and what she wanted.

The main message is that everyone has the right to resist conformity. V’s resistance consists by attacking the government’s installations and murdering the regime’s supporters.

This isn’t a story about a battle; it’s a story about terrorism that can be justified in a way that citizens are the ones who get benefits instead of damage.
