el Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano que es el segundo más grande del mundo y que abarca desde el norte de la Península de Yucatán hasta Honduras

Los corales poseen un alto porcentaje de la diversidad de la costa mexicana.

En el Golfo y Caribe de México se encuentran formaciones arrecifales ampliamente distribuidas; sin embargo en el Pacífico mexicano existen numerosas formaciones coralinas, inclusive en las aguas templadas de la Península de Baja California.

Se calcula que a lo largo de los más de 11 mil kilómetros de litoral, sobresalen alrededor de 130 lagunas costeras.

Siendo la Laguna Madre, Bahía Magdalena y Laguna de Términos las más grandes de México.

De aguas continentales es de 0.9 millones de hectáreas, albergando a más de 70 cuencas fluviales, con ríos como el Grijalva, Balsas y Usumacinta.

Los ríos que desembocan en el Pacífico son generalmente pequeños, mientras que los que lo hacen en el Golfo de México y el Caribe son por lo general grandes y caudalosos.
