Nowadays, a lot of companies have a lack of information of the future. That lack increases the possibility of failing in the market and it can make that the company becomes bankrupt. In this way, the company, which is not looking the future, is acting in a random way because it does not have a vision of ‘how will it be…or what if…?’ and its facts are kind of blindly. To avoid this situation many companies have developed some methods to ‘predict’ the future and to be prepared to hard situations or to take advantage of them.

The disease trends can be useful to prevent some diseases or to eat healthier, for example if there is a trend which says that in 2015 Ebola will be spread all over the world, we would be able to take the preventive methods seriously and avoid the disease. The technological trends can be useful as well, to avoid some issues related to it, for example if there is a trend which says that in 2020 all the population will have an iPad and every kid will play with them instead of toys, we would be able to avoid that our sons waste their childhood looking down at a screen.

Shell is a company that focus on oil and delivers it all over de world. But this is not a common oil company, Shell is one of the best because it has developed some methods to deal with the future and take advantage of it. One of the methods is Scenarios. This method consists in to build hypothetical situations of the future, see the different paths you would be able to choose if that situation happens, and finally choose the best path to the given situation, once you have built, hypothetically, the consequences of the different paths. With this method Shell has helped some governments and itself to choose the best option for future events.
