Bioshock.

Bioshock is a video game created and published by Irrational games company, in August 2007 (that at that time it was called 2K Boston). Bioshock is a first person shooter video game inspired in the novels Atlas Shrugged of Ayn Rand, 1984 of George Orwell and others dystopian writings of the 20th century. The game is set in 1960 in a fictional underwater city (Rapture) built in 1940 in the north of the Atlantic ocean by the business magnate Andrew Ryan who created a utopian society to escape of the political, economical and religious oppression.

Rapture was scientifically advanced in areas like engineering and biotechnology. The Scientifics of the city discover a plasmid named ADAM, the reason why the society collapse and becomes a dystopia. This plasmid, made of sea slugs, alters DNA of people giving them super human powers like telekinesis and pyrokinesis. The lead scientist, Dr. Tenembaum found they can increase the production of slugs implanting them in the stomach of orphaned girls known later as “Little Sisters”. The Little sisters were mentally programmed to take ADAM from the dead people and recycle it, what put them in danger because the ADAM affect the mental stability of society, they become violently insane . Because of this, Dr. Suchong created a diving suit for genetically-modified humans named “Big Daddys” to take care of the little girls.

A year later of the industrialization of ADAM by Fountain the city was a total chaos. The social, political and economic problems left the city in misery, most of the population was dead and the only survivors become “Splicers” people who lose their conscience and mentally health because of the excessive use of ADAM. Also, they are the violent result of the Civil War of Rapture, they killed the majority of sane population in the city becoming then the only habitants.

Bioshock is a critic to the society and view of what we can become because of the ambition of men itself. The utopia of a world can be dystopia just because of our actions.

“I believe in no God, no invisible man in the sky. But there is something more powerful in each of us, a combination of our efforts, a great chain of industry that unites us. But it is only when we struggle in our own interests that the chain pulls society in the right direction. The chain is too powerful and too mysterious for any government to guide. Any man who tells you differently either has his hand in your pocket or a pistol to your neck.” Andrew Ryan.
