The West

Indian Wars. Although their cultures varied from nomadic to village-dwelling, The Native Americans on the Plains maintained a largely subsistence economy in which the buffalo was central. When whites began setting the Plains, they killed millions of buffalo so that by the 1880s only a few hundred were left. The destruction disrupted life on the Plains, increasing conflict among the Native Americans. From the Sand Creek Massacre in 1862 to the so-called Battle of Wounded Knee in 1890, sporadic fighting took place between the United States Army and the Plains Indians.
