SEXUAL EDUCATION AT SCHOOLS

To talk about sex is taboo for many people. Adults sometimes feel uncomfortable when kids ask them about it or where babies come from. Many years ago, adult people never talked to their children about sexuality until they thought they were enough older to understand it. Nowadays, people sometimes have the necessity to explain what sexuality is to the kids, some parents do it and others do not.

A new law from the National Ministry of Education comprises to teach Sexual Education to children at schools. People have to understand it does not refer to talk about sexual relations to children but to talk how to take care of their bodies, learn about the human body, the differences between boys and girls among other things. But many parents misinterpret what kids will learn with this new law, and for this reason they oppose teachers educate their children in this new topic.

This new law which receives the name of “Integral Sexual Education” was created as a way to help children to be aware and protect themselves in case of rape, to teach them to take care of themselves and their couples when they start a relationship, or even to prevent teenage or unwanted pregnancies, and also to teach them about contracting sexually transmitted diseases. But some parents think their children will lose their childhood, others have the feeling it is bad just because they consider it is against their beliefs or religion, and even worse, they believe teachers and all the people involved are subjugating them as parents and also their beliefs.

Integral Sexual Education is not just for children. It is also to talk with the parents about how to teach children about sexuality. Teachers will teach what kids need to know about this, but their parents will be informed of the ways they can educate their daughters and sons when they become older enough to understand it, too. In spite of this opportunity, there are parents who do not understand very well this new law and for that reason neither they want their children be educated on this topic at the schools nor to explain children themselves, because they consider they are not capable of doing it.

It is important boys and girls learn to express their emotions and feelings, respect each other and their own bodies, and to make other people to respect them, too. Do not forget that with a good education on it we are teaching them to be safe.
