“Punk culture: Subculture or fashion?”

Punk culture community is falling down. There are three positions about this polemic: One of these is punk position which they don’t accept their movement is going to disappear in the world but will return from the ashes and will come strongly. Since this movement was born in the ancient Roman Imperium they said they have warrior ideas and a survival identity. Off course this mentality doesn´t work in ancient Rome. Another position of this problem is the Society point of view. In this one political government are involved because of their policies of anti-anarchist and security statements. For that reason they don’t allow any culture to begin to introduce anarchist ideas on the population. So it is concluded that for Society is unacceptable that this culture return. And the last one point of view focuses in a neutral position of this street phenomena. It means that arguments are given as references about the reasons of the vanishing of this culture without taking a pro or against position.

Punk people identity has been lost through the years because the original idea of these street phenomena has vanished. The punk subculture has its own values and philosophy. Through time it was develop a particular way to express their ideas especially in young people making them vulnerable to anarchic way of thinking and aggressive ideas that are not useful for the society, that’s why it has vanished gradually.

Subculture:

Dictionary Definition

• A subculture is "an ethnic, regional, economic, or social group exhibiting characteristic patterns of behavior sufficient to distinguish it from others within an embracing culture or society".

Context

• Subcultures tend to be based around common interests, hobbies and beliefs. Professions, religion, race, immigrant status and age all play a part in a group of people joining together and making their own subculture with characteristics that separate it from the dominant culture that surrounds them.

Punk Subculture:

Because punk is considered to be an underground movement, much information about the punk culture is not common knowledge. “Punk is more than just music; it has an in depth philosophy, based on anarchist political views and liberation” (Cahill 1998: 3). The lack of knowledge and understanding of the punk movement has caused it to be continually misinterpreted. The media has ignored the reasons behind Punk actions and wrongly attached negative connotations to the punk subculture.
