Present Simple
In English, the simple present, also known as the presente simple, is the present tense of (not perfective aspect ) .
It is one of several times used for this in English, the other being the present continuous , having progressive aspect , the present perfect and the present perfect continuous.
USE
Express truths ( Warm air rises - Hot air rises ) or stay (Her parents live in Madrid - Her parents live in Madrid ) and habitual action , ie , habits or routines in everyday life (I get up late on Sundays - I get up late on Sundays and I eat a lot of fruit - as much fruit).
It is also used to talk about future events , especially those subject to a schedule, such as arrivals and departures of public transport (The train leaves at nine - The train leaves at nine ) .Examples include:
Affirmative: I speak Inglés and French ( I speak English and French) - She speaks Inglés and French ( She speaks English and French)
Negative : I do not ( do not) smoke ( not smoke ) - He does not ( does not) smoke (he does not smoke )
Interrogative : Do you speak Spanish ? ( Do you speak Spanish ? ) - Does she speak Spanish ? ( Does she speak Spanish? )
There are two important considerations to keep in mind when using the present simple in English, both related to the use of negative and interrogative : we need the auxiliary verb do2 : I do not ( do not) live in Madrid ( not live in Madrid). Do you speak Spanish ? ( Do you speak Spanish ? ) .
Second, the auxiliary takes the form does do for the third person singular : She does not speak French ( She does not speak French). Does he live in Madrid? ( He lives in Madrid? )
Examples of conjugation:
Affirmative:
I like cheese ( I like cheese )
You like cheese
He / She / (It) likes cheeseg
We like cheese
They like cheese
Negative:
I do not like cheese ( I do not like cheese)
You do not like cheese
He / She / (It) does not like cheese
We do not like cheese
They do not like cheese
Interrogative:
Do I like cheese ? ( I like cheese ? )
Do you like cheese?
Does he / she / (it) like cheese ?
Do we like cheese ?
Do they like cheese ?
Present simple and frequency adverbs:
Adverbs of frequency are used with the present simple when you want to always give a sense of timing to the actions that are performed . Adverbs of frequency:
Always ( always)
Usually (usually)
Often (often)
Sometimes ( sometimes)
Rarely (rarely )
Never ( ever)
The frequency adverb must always be between the subject and the verb.
Examples:
John never eats pizza
Sara always watches TV in her room
They sometimes exercise in the park
An exception to this rule is the use of frequency adverbs with the verb to be . In these cases the adverb of frequency is placed after the verb .
Examples:
Often I am hungry
Usually I have is late to school
