TKT 2.8 ASSIGNMENT

Learners need to develop listening skills, but are very nervous about listening to tapes.

I would recomend videos or movies without subtitles, students are more relaxed when they can see the actions (because it helps to understand) besides only listen to them.

The textbook mainly uses texts to present new language. The layout is not very attractive.

We can use pictures/flashcards for it. Using the texbook we can select the vocabulary and ask to students to make flashcards to practice it. The reason is simple: Visual and kinesthetic activities are better to learn English.

Teacher would like an interesting way of teaching vocabulary such as shiny, glossy, gleaming, sparking etc, which didn't rely on dictionaries.

I would suggest to tell a story with this vocabulary, and project images to accompany it while the teacher talks, again visual materials are better to explain meanings and teaching vocabulary.

Teacher wants to introduce stories to young learners involving fairy-tale characters.

I would use a cd player with the audio of the story and I would give a sheet of paper with the transcription of it, it assuming that students are teenagers, or teacher can do a play with their students using realia. I think that learning becomes more meaningful when students live it,in the same way, the use of written materials is a good support for listening activities.

Teacher wants to summarise the main points of the lesson at the end of each class, highlighting points in different colours.

Charts/diagrams are the better option to summarise, they provide an easy visual way to understand and allow to link meanings and knowledge. We can expose them in a cardboard, making them on the board or in a .ppt resource (adding animation).

Teacher wants to encourage learners to use dictionaries to help them with pronunciation.

It is important that students know previously the phonetic chart since dictionaries use these symbols to represent the sounds. I think the better way to use a phonetic chart is on internet (like in this course) because it allow students practice and check the sounds in an interactive way which it’s fun.

Teacher wants to encourage learners to study outside class.

I would suggest homework / activities in teams or pairs, such as recording a video, make a play, watch a movie in English and make a paraphrase, summary, etc.., listening to music in English and investigate its meaning or prepare a presentation on a subject. The reason is that is hard to students practice in an individually way besides these activities must be interesting to them and useful for their quotidian life.
