Drug Abuse
Drug abuse is a compulsive and excessive habitual use of drugs or substances and this kind of abuse can cause addiction or dependence. There are many drugs or substances that can cause addiction in a person, the drugs can be illegal or legal, in a case of legal drug is by a prescription. The most common and popular drugs are: alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, cocaine, heroin and prescribed drugs. Teenagers are the most susceptible to use drugs because nowadays is very easy to obtain these drugs and also they start using them just to experiment how they feel. Drug abuse is a serious social problem that can destroy a family or even a society, this problem has three important causes and three effects.
The three most important causes of drug abuse are: genetic factors, psychological factors and social factors. The genes matters in addiction, a big part of the population can be susceptible to get addicted because of their genes. For that reason it depends of each people´s genes, for example maybe one person smokes marijuana occasionally just for pleasure and another smokes it because his or her body needs it. Hereditary is a notable risk for addiction. For example if one person has a drug addict father or mother that person has a lot of possibilities to become drug addict, too. Another cause Is the psychological factors, when someone who has been diagnosed with mental disorder such as depression or schizophrenia, that person can become addict of his or her medicines. In some cases if a person with a mental disorder becomes addict, the addiction can aggravate the symptoms or even disturb the original condition. Another cause of drug abuse are the social factors. For example when the parents don´t supervise or don’t pay attention of their children´s necessities and behaviors they can be liable to experiment with drugs. Another social factor is the peer pressure; it is most common among teenagers because they sometimes want to be part of a specific social group or they want to be accepted. These three risky factors are the most common in our country and around the world.
Drug abuse can have many negative effects like: physical effects, psychological effects and social effects. If a person consumes frequently drugs he or she is going to have serious physical effects. Physical effects of drug abuse vary depending of drug but are commonly seen in all systems of the body. The first physical effect of drug addiction takes place in the brain and can make serious damages in all parts of the brain. Other physical effects of drug abuse are: contraction of HIV, hepatitis, heart attack, respiratory problems and others. The most common psychological effect of drug abuse is addiction because a drug addict feels the necessity to consume drugs daily. Other psychological effect can be: wild mood swings, depression, anxiety, paranoid, confusion, etc. Drug addiction doesn’t just affect the addict it also can affect his or her family, friends and job, Drug abuse can have a huge negative impact in a person´s life, it can affect social things like a marriage, relationship and education. Also it can be difficult to find a good job and addict is susceptible to have federal problems. All of these serious effects can change in a completely way a person´s life in a negative form.
As a conclusion, many factors can cause that person abuses of drugs and this kind of abuse has serious effects. It´s impossible to predict who will become drug addict but in the most of the cases the person has the decision of start or not consuming drugs. Treatment programs for a drug abuse can be community mental health centers and specialized chemical abuse rehabilitation center. Additional programs include self-help groups, halfway houses and therapeutic communities. There are different types of treatment for drug abuse but the best is to prevent drug abuse in the first place.
