Steel: Stainless steel is a steel with high corrosion resistance, since chromium or other alloying metals containing, possess high affinity for oxygen and reacts with it forming a passivation layer, thus preventing corrosion of iron (metals purely stainless steel, which do not react with oxygen are gold and platinum, and lower purity are called corrosion resistant, such as phosphorus-containing). However, this layer can be affected by some acids, resulting in the iron is oxidized by intergranular attack and mechanisms or generalized bites. Some types of stainless steel also contain other alloying elements; the main ones are nickel and molybdenum.
