El canal de Panamá es una vía de navegación interoceánica entre el mar Caribe y el océano Pacífico que atraviesa el istmo de Panamá en su punto más estrecho
Se inauguró 15 de agosto de 1914.
Ha tenido el efecto de acortar en tiempo y distancia en la comunicación marítima, disminuyendo el intercambio comercial y económico al proporcionar una vía de tránsito corta y relativamente barata.
La construcción del Canal de Panamá conllevó tres problemas principales: ingeniería, saneamiento y organización.
El primer barco en transitar fue el Ancon.
El Canal de Panamá costó a los estadounidenses aproximadamente $375,000,000, incluyendo los $10,000,000 pagados a Panamá y los $40,000,000 pagados a la compañía francesa.
Su construcción constituyó el proyecto de construcción más costoso en la historia de los Estados Unidos en ese tiempo.
La República de Panamá asumió la responsabilidad total por la administración el 31 de diciembre de 1999.
