Acquisition of Knowledge Activity

Phase 1

1. Respond to the following issues that were seen in previous learning unit.

a) Outlines the differences between vector and scalar quantities.

The scalar quantity only has a magnitude; the vector has magnitude, a direction and sense.

b) What meaning have concurrent and non-concurrent vectors?

Concurrent forces act on a single point, so they can be represented by a single net force acting at that point.

Non-concurrent forces act at different points on an object and result in a net turning moment, or torque, acting on the object.

c) How changes the magnitude of the resulting vector between two if the angle between decreases? If the angle decreases, the magnitude of the resultant vector increases.

d) What is the sum of three vectors that form a closed triangle? is zero

e) What is the procedure for adding two concurrent vectors? Add component at component with a graphic method

f) What is the procedure for adding two not concurrent vectors? Add component at component with an analytic method

g) If two Force vectors have magnitudes of 8N and 10N, what angle is the magnitude of the resultant maximum? And, what angle the magnitude of the resultant is minimum?

The resultant is maximum when the magnitudes have a same direction and sense.

The resultant is minimum when the magnitudes have a same direction but different sense.

h) Under which condition the magnitude of a vector is equal to that of one of its components? In the case that the magnitude of the vector is the only that you have, or the other component is zero.

i) If a vector F is drawn on a plane x y , What range of values can take the angle if:

• Its components x and y are both positive? First quadrant (0° - 90°)

• If it components x is positives and its component y is negative? Fourth quadrant (270° - 360°)

• Its components x and y are both negative? Third quadrant (180° - 270°)

• Its components x is negative and your component y is positive? Second quadrant (90° - 180°
