II. Movie Review:
The day after tomorrow is a science-fiction movie based on a series of chronic and catastrophic climate even sure global cooling which will eventually lead to an ice age. The movie starts, with a group of Paleo climatologist, on an expedition in Antarctica where the protagonist Jack Hall, Frank and Jason are drilling ice for some experiments and the ice shelf completely breaks off. Jack presents his conclusions but many have it hard to believe. Violent weather begins to cause mass destruction and deaths. The situation worsens and develops into 3 massive hurricanes. Now it is up to the world to prepare for a torrential, massive change.
I would surely recommend this movie to teens, young adults and adults. It is a complex movie for children to understand. This is a movie where you can learn many things, from what harms our environment to every day, and Christian lessons. I really enjoyed this film, it's filled with suspense action and fast-paced exciting events. The day after tomorrow has amazing special effects that make it more realistic.
III. Concepts
1-Snow shoes:
With seats of chairs, Sam and his friends made snowshoes to walk through snow. This increases the surface area of each step therefore reduces the pressure. This avoided their feet to sink in the snow.
2-Water freezing:
This is an example of a state of matter. When the water got to the subway station it froze the process called freezing.
3-Chemical Property:
When Sam and his friends find shelter in the library they create a fire burning books. This is an example of a chemical property. Cause a paper on being burned becomes ash having a different properties.
4-Hail:
In the city, huge chunks begin to fall from the sky. Hail is formed through deposition. This process is when gas turns directly into a solid.
5-Melting point:
Because ice has a high melting point, after the Earth settled out, the climate was still cool and ice could not reach its melting point.
6-Scientific Method:
Jack and his teammates approach the scientific method. They first had a logical approach to solving the problem by serving and collect data, formulating hypothesis, and then testing these hypothesis and theories.
7- Technological development
Jack uses a device to see hurricanes from a satellite make these predictions of where their locations might be. The logical development typically involves the production and use of products that improve our quality of life. Jack also used to GPS which is a device used when you want to find a place, in this case, his son.
8-Thermal heat:
To maintain thermal heat the group stayed close together using each other's body heat to stay warm. Thermal heat was the only way to stay alive.
9-Crystal lattice
Is the arrangement of the atoms and particles inside a crystal. It's a symmetrical three dimensional array of atoms inside a crystal. Crystal breaks if there is a sudden change in temperature.
10- Conductor of heat
The ship Sam and his friends entered to get penicillin was metal. Metal is a great conductor of heat; that is why it was frozen inside the ship although water wasn't inside.
IV. Christian principles and Life Lessons:
Christian principles:
1-love:
•Just like Jesus loves us because we are his children, Jack loves Sam because he is his son and would do anything for him.
2-prayer:
• The main character uses the phrase "hope and pray" when asked what to do about the huge hurricane.
3-hope/faith:
• Jack had hoped in finding his son, and Sam had hope and faith that Jack would find him. Just like this, we need to have faith that Jesus will come for us.
