Theories of Truth

People used to look for the truth via different methods. Now we are going to talk about these methods.

I’m sure I’m gonna win the lottery tonight. I had a feeling!

Obviously it’s a belief, you can’t know tha you are gonna win the lottery

2. I’m sure she did it, because her friend told it to me.

It’s a belief because you can’t know if the friend tells the truth.

3. Tomorrow it is going to rain, as the weather radar shows it.

A prediction isn’t an evidence, you can’t

4. In Newton's second law, the force acting on an object is equal to the mass of an object times its acceleration.

It’s an evidence, the law was certified by the scientific comunity.

5. The movie is going to start at 6pm. It is written on the screen and, also, the seller told it to me. 

Evidence, the billboard is to show people when the movies starts.

Is it possible to know "the truth"? Look for these theories and write basic features of them. Which theory is closer to you? (pdf)

• Dogmatism:

Intolerance of ambiguity

Defensive cognitive closure,

Rigid certainty,

Compartmentalization,

Limited personal insight

• Scepticism:

Questions everything and takes nothing on faith, even from cherished established institutions.

Asks questions to try to understand new things and are open to learning about them.

Applies critical examination and inquiry to all sides, including their own.

• Looking for knowledge:

It’s the scientist method, the theory has to be certified by someone.

It’s the closest method to the truth
