 ALTERNATIVE ROCK

Alternative rock is a musical genre that was born in the 80s and often used consists of non-traditional sounds and musical elements, with less melody, harmony or rhythm, adhere to the so-called underground culture (ie, anti-genre music popular, anti-business and contrary to the common and popular styles). It reached its higher levels of maturity and popularity in the 90s and all subgenres that have emerged from it since. The term "alternative" was coined to describe a new and different way to "rock".

During the 80s the commercial success of some alternative rock bands who did not abandon their original approaches such as Sonic Youth REM or The Cure, assumed such importance would not recorded for an independent label or succeed only in underground circuits as an alternative to mainstream music The music now known as alternative rock was known under other labels before the "alternative" adjective out of common use. The term was used "college rock" in the United Kingdom to define the music programming in college radio stations and tastes of the students who heard. In the US the term most used was "indie" denomination that was born around 1985 to group several subgenres and that continues today. "Indie rock" was the equivalent expression in the USA until the commercial height that lived the sort in the first 90, because most of these groups recorded in separate companies. By the year 1990 the term "alternative rock" became popular although the expression was first used in the mid-eighties 80.En the US college radio began broadcasting alternative rock while commercial broadcasters ignored these new groups. However in the UK was reported on BBC One by several disc jockeys among which especially John celebrated Peel worldwide for its famous Peel Sessions For this reason, some artists who were considered cult in the United States, obtained considerable success in the UK. In 1986 the night was born 120 Minutes program on MTV space that would become the most popular showcase of the alternative rock until its commercial explosion in the 90. The explosion of alternative rock counted in the US with the help of TV network MTV and Lollapalooza, a traveling festival that helped popularize alternative groups like Nine Inch Nails Primus The Smashing Pumpkins or Hole.

In terms of sound it is very similar to the post-punk rippers and lacking any sense depressive festive happy or less melodic less harmonic sounds.
