QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

Constant observation, the analysis of each situation related to behavior among people, is the basis of qualitative research. And is that people are not exact numbers. Our behavior lies in the relationship with our environment, experiences, knowledge and contexts that, often, we escape from our control.

Therefore, it is necessary to apply a qualitative research method that includes all consequences of human behavior in relation to cultures and ideologies. This could be the main objective of the qualitative method.

Sometimes the cause-effect has a very qualitative connotation. In this post we will see what is the qualitative method, how and where it is applied, what are the types of qualitative research.

DEFINITION

The method of qualitative research is the collection of information based on the observation of natural behaviors, speeches, open answers for the subsequent interpretation of meanings. While quantitative methods provide numerical values of surveys, experiments, interviews with concrete answers to perform statistical studies and see how their variables behave. Very applied in the sampling.

However, the concept of qualitative method analyzes the whole of the discourse between the subjects and the relation of meaning to them, according to cultural, ideological and sociological contexts. If there is a selection made based on some parameter, it will no longer be considered qualitative.

Let's say it is the method of qualitative research does not discover, but builds knowledge, thanks to the behavior between the people involved and all their observable behavior.

HISTORY

The method of qualitative research takes a long time between us, although it began to theorize in the middle of century XX. The Greeks already observed behaviors, a primitive method necessary for our evolution. Many social sciences used both methods: qualitative and quantitative, but it was not until the 1960s that they began to talk about a method that not only extracted data based on sample studies.

Techniques for analyzing qualitative information began to be theorized through Simon Freud's Psychoanalysis about 1896 in Europe. And in the twentieth century, Karl Marx and the Critical Theory of the University of Frankfurt, put into practice the concept of qualitative method.

The characteristics of the qualitative approach were applied in the United States in the 50's of last century, thanks to currents such as the Phenomenology - things are shown in the most original or patent way, Hermeneutics - interpretation of sacred scriptures and philosophical texts and artistic - or symbolic interactionism - understanding of society through communication.
