In 1794, the City Hotel was the first purpose-built hotel building in the United States. The City Hotel had 73 rooms, and for the time was considered to be quite large building.

In 1800 in the Industrial Revolution, European taverns emerged that began to combine lodging with food and drink service. The travelers who stayed is this, they shared the beds and rooms.
