FRANCO REGIME

Franco was a historical movement of an authoritarian character that took place in Spain, after the Civil War between 1936 and 1939. However, the Franco period ran from 1939 to 1975, when the dictator died.

The Franco regime strongly opposed the ideologies of the left, with the aim of preventing communism from advancing towards Spain and the rest of Western Europe. The press, the radio and later also the television were controlled by the military who were in charge. Opposition parties were banned, as were labor unions. They even banned co-official languages such as Catalan and Euskera.

The Franco regime begins to weaken at the same time as the health of its leader, Francisco Franco. The protests, strikes and opposition parties begin to have greater preponderance, and the Franco regime ends with the death of the general.

In this way, the rest of the political parties that tried to propagate their political doctrine were considered illegal and had to carry out their campaigns clandestinely.
  2. Control de media: Both the press, the radio and later television were controlled by the military in command. By controlling the mass media, an attempt was made to regulate public opinion by suppressing any attempt at revolution or thought against the regime.
  3. Government power: Like any authoritarian government, its power, control and execution was under the command of Franco. For this reason his power was totalitarian.
  4. Franco propagation: Through inculcated customs, the government and the media tried to inculcate and highlight religious and nationalist values, fostering the unity, greatness and independence of Spain. This could be seen in the slogan of the time that accompanied this thought: "España, una grande y libre".
