Using death penalties in the world ( 2009)

Abolished .

Suppressed for crimes not committed in exceptional circumstances ( such as those committed in wartime ) .

Regarded as a criminal penalty , but no longer applied .

Regarded as a criminal sanction , even applied .

The death of criminals and political dissidents has been used by some companies at a time in its history , both to punish crime and to suppress political dissent . Currently the death penalty has been abolished and penalized in almost all European countries (except Belarus) , and most relevant to Oceania ( Australia, New Zealand and East Timor ) . Most Latin American countries have abolished the death penalty, while in countries like the United States of America, Guatemala and most Caribbean states is still applied . In Asia the death penalty is allowed in democracies such as Japan and India. In Africa , still used in Botswana and Zambia.

1) Ratio of Justice: this idea is based on the one hand, by religious foundations, whose highest expression is found in the Old Testament, such as the law of retaliation: "Eye for eye, tooth for tooth";

Arguments in favor of the death penalty based on the Bible , particularly the Old Testament

The Bible offers , orders or presupposes the death penalty, or an order to kill certain people or groups of people in many passages of Scripture , such as:

Genesis 9:6 " Whoever sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed "

Revelation 13:10 "If anyone kills with the sword , with the sword must be killed " ,

The penalty for violating the commandment of Exodus 20:13 ( not kill ) is precisely the death penalty (Ex. 21:12; Nm.35 :16 -21 ) . Exodus 21: 12-14: " Whoever kills someone killing him put to death . But if he not in wait , but God deliver him into his hands , then I will appoint a place whither he shall flee. But any presumptuously upon his neighbor, to slay him with guile; take him from my altar, that he may die . "

Leviticus 24:17,21 : " Also, the man who strikes death to any person put to death . Whoever kills an animal must make restitution , but whoever kills a man shall die."

Exodus 21:23-25 : " But if it does more damage , then thou shalt give life for life , eye for eye , tooth for tooth , hand for hand , foot for foot , burn for burn , wound for wound , stripe for stripe ."

Leviticus 20:6,9 : " If anyone consulting necromancers, and wizards , whoring after them , I will set my face against him and cut off ... Every man who curses his father or his mother, shall surely die " .

Arguments for the existence of the death penalty

In favor of the death penalty is often argued well that is a shame just and moral ( ethical argument ) , well that's a shame effective in preventing crime ( utilitarian argument ), or the religious argument or authority :

The death penalty is just and moral , for the following reasons :

justice

It is the only just penalty for certain heinous crimes (murder , rape of children , treason ... ) , especially those who deprive others of their lives , they are irreplaceable assets . Whoever kills iron to iron dies.

Loss of right to life

Who commit certain serious crimes has broken the social contract and no longer has rights against the society that has suffered his crimes , not even the right to life or the protection of society , for whom it commits has broken with its ties with her .
