Hip - Hop. English practice

1.The legend says that hip - hop came to Cali in the 70s through stowaways, from the port of Buenaventura, sailed to the United States. The tradition was to send back a cassette with American music as survival signal, proof of dream fulfilled.

But the film also made its contribution. In the 80 some films came to Cali  like Breakin ', which chronicled the world of American breakdance, like Beat Street, a film about the four components of hip - hop (rap, breakdance, graffiti, disk jockey) or the movie "Breakin '2: Electric Boogaloo," a 1984 musical

2.Without ignoring the great influence of salsa in poor neighborhoods like  Potrero Grande, most will say that his real music is rap, in the capital of salsa, not just the east raps

 The rap helps you be aware of your reality, be aware of where you are and helps you to understand that violence is not the way

Young people from the popular neighborhoods of Cali, felt attracted by the hip hop`s rhythm and movements, they translated the lyrics, and they felt completele identified with the song`s meaning, it was nothing more than their own reality: poverty, racism, violence, overcrowding, marginalization..

3. in the 90s, a kind of competition called 'tiradera' or 'pelea de gallos' or 'zapatearse' was made by boys who gathered in neighborhoods such as the Unionde vivienda popular and they compete with rappers from other communes.

the one who won , got the respect of others. 

The rap is still used like a tool to interact with the others,to be recognize.

their songs on rimes are always about topics like, what happens in the neighborhood, in the life of everyone, but also about the protest against the injustice`s system , it also denounces politicians and authorithies corruption and about machism.

 "rap`s conscience" makes you a person with critical look

Foundation Hip - Hop Rock

In 1997 a project presented by a rap`s group, came to cali the first technical resources to make music (instrumental and recording) those times were for Cali`s HIPHOP the Golden Age.

In 1999 the force that brought the cali`s HIP HOP got lower because the technical equipment in which a large number of groups from the city prepared their musical works, was stole.

 That left only memories, some songs that sounded in the radio, and some instrumental songs  are still preserved.

 but this was no a trouble to Cali`s HIPHOP groups, they continue their work.

 the first cali`s compact CD  made by Zona Marginal named "La expresion de un pueblo"was released in this year.

Zona marginal  is one of the most important  hip - hop`s groups in Cali and Colombia. They have performed in Cuba,  in Europe, and their discs have been available in major music stores.

 One member of Marginal Zone says that his first album (1999) was called "The expression of a people." because  They were stories describing, denounced what young people live in poor neighborhoods of Cali: for example the gangs.
