„Requiem for a dream” is a psychological drama movie which was released over ten years ago and directed by Darren Aronofsky. It is an American production which involves talented actors such as Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto or Jennifer Conelly. The plot evolves around three main characters, each of whom has to face with the inner and outer struggles. It portrays a vision of people affected by different kinds of addictions.

Sara Goldfarb is an elderly TV maniac who wins a chance to participate in a live show. She gets enormously excited and decides to loose some weight and fit into symbolic red dress until she appears on TV. At the same time her son develops a serious problem with drugs and involves his girlfriend into his dreadful reality. While watching the movie we can come to a conclusion that it’s none of the characters that plays the main role. Their addiction is.

Threatening situations may be triggering and disturbing for sensitive viewers. Some scenes accompanied by accompanied with Clint Mansell’s brilliant sountrack give thrill down one’s spine and forces spectators to think.As a matter of fact, this film is not an entertaining production for a lazy Saturday evening. It requires meditative attitude to it and contemplating the mental condition of each particular character.

What I admire about the movie myself is the reliable acting. I guess it was a tremendous effort to personify such complex and difficult characters. Another aspect worth mentioning is unique direction, characteristic for Darren Aronofsky, which can also be seen in “Black Swan”.

“Requiem for a dream” is definitely one of the must-see movies. I would highly recommend seeing it to anyone who is a fan of ambitious cinema. It is undoubtedly one of those productions which has a significant influence on our attitude to the issue of addictions and mental disorders.
