Archbishop Oscar Romero: Fighting Against Injustice

Archbishop Oscar Romero was a Catholic priest and Archbishop who showed that courage is the most powerful weapon of all. Archbishop Romero fought against injustice in El Salvador even when it caused problems with the government of El Salvador and the leaders of the Catholic Church. He committed his life to trying to help the people of El Salvador. Although Oscar Romero was killed for this, he showed that one person can help bring justice.

Oscar Romero devoted his life to fighting injustice. When he was elected to head the bishop’s episcopacy, he was quiet and not an important voice for justice. Bishop Romero’s life changed when he realized the poverty of the people in El Salvador and how badly the government treated them. He believed everyone deserved peace and justice. He gave people hope because he was an important person and was willing to stand up to the government and the Church and demand justice. Romero talked to the people in El Salvador to try to bring them hope. He also told the world about the killing and torture of the people in El Salvador by the government. Oscar Romero had many great words to help bring hope to the people of El Salvador.

Oscar Romero gave many speeches and sermons to bring hope to the people of El Salvador. He talked about peace and justice. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty." He also said, “If we are worth anything, it is not because we have more money or more talent, or more human qualities. Insofar as we are worth anything, it is because we are grafted on to Christ's life, his cross and resurrection. That is a person's measure.” He stood up for the poor people of El Salvador even though he was alone.

Oscar Romero was committed to the people of El Salvador even though he had no help. He knew it was possible the government was going to kill him, but Bishop Romero kept fighting for justice. The other bishops did not help Bishop Romero and wrote to Rome and tried to get him fired. Bishop Romero even wrote to American President Jimmy Carter asking him to stop sending money to El Salvador because the military was using it to kill people. During one of his last sermons, Bishop Romero asked the army to stop killing people. He said, "Brothers, you are from the same people; you kill your fellow peasant . . . No soldier is obliged to obey an order that is contrary to the will of God . . . " He was killed during a sermon the next day.

Although Oscar Romero was killed for his beliefs, he showed that one person can make a difference. He fought for justice every day. He
