Over the years, technology has significantly changed the way people communicate. Originally, the telephone replaced the telegraph. Now cellphones, email and the Internet top the list of preferred communication methods. As more businesses and educational institutions use technology to communicate, society seems to have accepted, if not embraced, the increased role technology now plays in everyday life.

The email message is replacing handwritten correspondence in business and personal interactions. Businesses use email to communicate with customers and staff. Schools often use email to communicate with parents, teachers and students. In addition, people can send an email message and quickly get a response whereas sending other written correspondence may require a longer turnaround time.

Internet-based social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook allow people to communicate with friends, family, colleagues and even complete strangers in an online forum. These sites allow people to share information and photos with others, regardless of the physical miles that otherwise may have prevented them from doing so.

The use of online chat forums allows people to converse with others across the street or across the country in real time without picking up a telephone. Many email providers also provide chat capabilities as do social networking sites. Other sites allow users to join chat rooms where they can communicate with complete strangers about a specific topic.

The popularity of the cellular phone has increased in recent years because this portable telephone allows people to stay connected just about anywhere they may go. In addition to placing and receiving voice calls, most cellphones provide the ability to send text messages to other cell phone users. Some cellphones allow users to gain access to their email accounts. In addition, many people use their cellphone to access social networking websites and send instant messages. A few cell phones even allow users to place video calls. Using these cellular features typically come at an additional fee, unless used under an unlimited access plan. Orth M.

A few years ago people could not imagine how the Internet may change our life. Nowadays the Internet has become inseparable part of life, one of those essential things that we use every day. It is difficult to imagine our future without easy access to information or social networks. In my opinion, the Internet has more advantages than disadvantages.

First of all, the Internet can do and find almost everything. Reading books, listening to music, watching films, playing games, chatting with friends, finding information, learning online and many other things can be done in the Internet.

On the other hand, the Internet has so many things that distract attention from the necessary activities and people spend a lot of time to find requisite information. In addition to this, in the Internet there are many harmful viruses, which can break operation system. They might delete much of data and it will be difficult and expensive to restore. On different forums children can face with aggressive people and find prohibited information.

However, the Internet lets people to connect with each other all around the world. It helps people to quickly communicate with distant relatives and friends, also it helps to find new friends from any continent. Many useful services where you can find out the weather, news and TV programs are accessible within several seconds. Moreover, people can buy clothes online without leaving home, that helps not to spend a lot of time on shopping.

All in all, people always will be arguing about pluses and minuses of the Internet. Quick access to any kinds of information lets people save the time, because we can find everything in one place. The Internet is a great thing created by mankind, which has taken a great step in the future existence of the world. Kane J.

Communications through the Internet combine many of the kinds of communication we are already familiar with, such as mail and telephone. It also adds many new capabilities that were virtually impossible before, such as:

• interactive communication with large groups of people simultaneously

• combining different media, like words, sounds, pictures and video, all in a single message

• storing and delaying messages so the receiver can address them when ready

• reaching automated services or information libraries from your home or office

Perhaps most importantly, the Internet puts a new set of tools in the hands of individuals, so that anyone can become not just a consumer of information, but a producer, publisher, or broadcaster as well. When you create a page on the World Wide Web, for example, it can be seen by potentially millions of people around the world. Potomac KnowledgeWay.

Social technologies have broken the barriers of space and time, enabling us to interact 24/7 with more people than ever before. But like any revolutionary concept, it has spawned a set of new barriers and threats. Is the focus now on communication quantity versus quality? Superficiality versus authenticity? In an ironic twist, social media has the potential to make us less social; a surrogate for the real thing. For it to be a truly effective communication vehicle, all parties bear a responsibility to be genuine, accurate, and not allow it to replace human contact altogether.

In the workplace, the use of electronic communication has overtaken face-to-face and voice-to-voice communication by a wide margin. This major shift has been driven by two major forces: the speed/geographic dispersion of business, and the lack of comfort with traditional interpersonal communication among a growing segment of our employee population: Gen Y and Millennials. Studies show that these generations – which will comprise more than 50% of the workforce by 2020 – would prefer to use instant messaging or other social media than stop by an office and talk with someone. This new communication preference is one of the “generational gaps” plaguing organizations as Boomers try to manage to a new set of expectations and norms in their younger employees, and vice versa.
