Introduction:

This is a document where i try to explain the lack of speaking on secondary students, that involves lack of confidence, lack of vocabulary and some strategies to make students speak, for example giving them knowing phrases and when they are going to use them.

The lack of speaking it refers to how students don’t speak English for some factors students are going through, for example their age, because they are having some physical changes that makes them be afraid of what people can say about them and this include the lack of speaking, why? Students think or feel that the teachers and classmates are going to mock of them if their pronunciation is not that good, for me this is one of the most important factors that students have.

Also if students don’t have vocabulary on their own that is completely understood they are not going to be able to speak, because they try but it’s difficult for them even to make a sentence and also the mother tongue make them not speak and try to translate directly from the Spanish to English, sometimes can be coherent sentence, but not all the time.

1. Using minimal responses As i mention before the lack of confidence affects students speaking and they only listen, but never speak. Teacher and students should have a stock of minimal responses that will make them speak.

2. Recognizing scripts

This is when they already know what to say depending on the situation, for example greeting, asking and giving directions, or some base questions students can answer.

3. Using language to talk about language

On this part is when teacher gives some tips to the students about some phrases to confirm something that hasn’t been understood, because on this particularly age they are shy about another speaker knows that speaker one hasn’t understand anything . and also teacher creates a confidence and practice environment.

Understanding how Americans use English and what they expect to hear can help improve conversations between native and non-native speakers.
