Novel analyses: The Great Gatsby

Do you think love is based on material things such as money or social status? Many people don’t realize the importance and the meaning of true love in life. They just forget that it is a serious feeling and that it is not based on material things. We can observe these actions in the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott., how it gives a different definition of true love throughout the story. Using many literary devices, F. Scott expresses himself to the readers. The plot, setting, and characters are included in the novel “The Great Gatsby” in order to show how love may be based on material and superficial things rather than true love.

The plot of the novel “The Great Gatsby” is used to explain how love is based on superficial things such as money and social status. Throughout the plot, we can see how this theme affects the novel. It talks about how love between couples is not really true love and how they are with each other for reasons of money and status, not because of real love. They also, unrespectfully, have affairs with others in public. We could see all this with Daisy and Tom’s marriage; it wasn’t a true love relationship. They didn’t really love each other, they were loving the money and their social status and didn’t care about hiding their affairs. All these things caused the plot to be dramatic and liberal. It also makes the theme to act in a more visible way, giving the readers the idea of what is going to be about, expecting liberal actions throughout the plot.

Do you think the setting of the novel “The Great Gatsby” affected the theme of love? The setting of this novel is set in New York and Long Island. It was created in the 1920’s, during the Jazz age, which means that it is associated with materialism, immorality and freedom of choosing. Making love not a serious item due to the influence of the setting. F. Scott uses the setting and their environment to portray love as materialistic and gives the characters freedom to do things without limits; as we could see with Tom’s affair with Myrtle and Gatsby’s affair with Daisy, they were both married having affairs with others forgetting the meaning of true love. In this novel the setting is included in order to show how love is based on immorality, no respect and materialism rather than true love.

The characters from the novel “The Great Gatsby” are incorporated in order to show the readers how love is based in superficial things rather than true love. Each character of the novel has his or her own characteristics which help us identify them as people who think differently about true love. These characters: Tom, Nick, Gatsby, Myrtle, Daisy, Jordan and Wilson compose the important part of the novel, giving the novel a free significance of love. Affairs and lovers were permitted and seeing love for materialist things too. A great example is Myrtle; she is married but goes with Tom just because of the money and the great things he gives to her, having an affair. Each character gives a little detail of their “true love” and we can see throughout the story how they use that theme in life for their own benefit.
