Is Technology Dehumanizing Society?

Have you ever considered how useful technology is nowadays? Technology is now a big part of our society and of our foreseeable future and people cannot imagine their lives without it, but if we abuse of it, the disadvantages are considerable.

The first and most important thing about technology is that allow us to improve our communication in long distances; with the betterment of internet and gadgets, you can communicate with them almost whenever you want, at an extremely cheaper cost and faster speed than years ago. For example people living in Spain can communicate with people living in Argentina through many technology tools such as Skype, Hangouts, etc. What is more, modern transportation technology makes it really easy to travel long distances. Transport is a very important both in our lives and in the business world.  Transportation technology has evolved with years, as in the case of the science fiction short story by Philip k. Dick "Human Is", the character, Lester Herrick could travel to the dying planet Rexor IV thanks to the advancement in technology.

On the other hand, there are strong arguments which suggest that technology is dehumanizing our society. Social Isolation is increasing, people are spending more time using social networks and neglecting their real life. Technology has replaced our old way of interacting. Accounts can easily make you interact with fifty friends online; you will feel no need of going out to make or meet friends which at a later stage, leads to loneliness. Another drawback is that people increased dependency on technology, like in “Human is” Lester forgot to enjoy time with her wife, Jill Herricks, instead he was focused in finishing his report on Betelgeuse XI, leaving her alone without love and care.

Taking everything into account, technology without a doubt has its pro and cons, but it is important to keep in mind, when you need to be involved without being affected by all this things. You have to remember that too much of anything is bad. Technology should be used carefully and cautiously, only with beneficial purposes for humanity.
