Koalas

Koalas belong to the category of animals known as marsupials. They are small, with a total area of 2 or 3 feet and its weight varies between 10 and 30 pounds. The males are larger than females and those living in the north are smaller than those in other parts of Australia.

koalasDefinitivamente koalas are not bears, but this is a name often given because of their physical characteristics. Their bodies are covered with very thick hair, including the ears, have nails on their fingers and opposable thumbs. They also have a kind of thick pads on their fingers and toes to grip and scale as they move through the trees.

Many agree that it is boring watching the koalas, they are animals that do not do much with his time. Usually they rest or sleep about 18 hours a day, eat for almost five hours and the remaining time devoted to their own toilet. The most interesting part of watching a koala is when a female has a young son with her, although you may not notice during the first 6 months old.

Hatchlings remain in a security bag in front of her mother, but can sometimes be seen whether poke their heads. After six months, the small koala will begin to walk mounted on the back of the mother for another 6 months. Koalas are helpless at birth, have no hair, eyes closed, and still do not have ears. The mother should eat lots of eucalyptus leaves to produce the milk that your child will grow.

criaLa koala and lack of development at birth is what makes the koala a very unique among the other animal. We do not know much about the time when the different parts of the baby begin to develop, since it remains well hidden for long periods of time. The muscles present in the abdomen of the mother koalas allow closing the bag that carries her young if you have to provide protection.

Between 1919 and 1930 more than 2 million koalas were shot for their thick skin, it is known that there was great demand from consumers to use this type of clothing, but it is currently illegal to hunt them. Approximately 80 000 of them remain today in the wild but there are also a large number found in zoos around the world.

The koala is very susceptible to a variety of diseases in nature. This has caused a significant reduction of its population. They may have diseases that cause infertility or other problems that allow the development of large amounts of fluid in the lungs and may even lose their vision, which makes the most of the ability to move.

In the last six years it is believed that about half of the koala population has died. Some experts claim that this animal will not survive more than 30 years if the conditions on the planet remain as usual and important measures to be taken in order to protect their environment and allow them to prosper.

Only time will tell whether koalas are able to continue to survive with all the changes happening around them. They have been on earth for millions of years, there is still hope that we will be able to help keep that pattern. Ironically, the government of Australia does not seem as worried about that future.
