Physics resume

Light:

  • Light waves are electromagnetic waves. They are part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
  • They include visible and invisible light (radiation) waves.
  • Light waves are made up of tiny particles called PHOTONS.
  • Photons have no mass but have energy.
  • Light travels at the approximate speed of 300000000 meters per second in a vacuum (no interferences).
  • That is extremely fast!!!
  • Nothing can travel faster than the speed of light that we know of.

Shadows:

  • We don't usually notice shadows but they are everywhere.
  • [pic 1]A dark shadow (umbra) is formed where no light falls and a light shadow (penumbra) is formed where some light falls, but some is blocked.

Colours:

  • Visible light lies between 400 and 700 nanometers.
  • The different wavelengths are seen as different colors.
  • Electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength of over 750 nm is called infra-red, and radiation under 350 nm is ultra-violet

Each color has a different frequency

ROY G BIV:

  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Indigo
  • Violet

Our brain decodes reflected light!

If an object absorbs all of the frequencies of visible light except for the frequency associated with green light (so objects absorbs ROYBIV), then the object will appear green in the presence of ROYGBIV.

If an object absorbs all of the frequencies of visible light except for the frequency associated with blue light, then the object will appear blue in the presence of ROYGBIV.

So basically, whatever colors are transmitted through, the object appears that color.

The eye:

CORNEA:

It is transparent, found at the front and REFRACTS light.

Light enters the PUPIL and here it is regulated (more light, gets bigger).

The IRIS controls the regulation and amount of light that gets to the retina.

The RETINA contains rods and cones that help convert light energy into signals for the brain.

The LENS also refracts light to form a clear image on the retina.

The OPTIC NERVE transmits visual information from the retina to the brain. It connects the eye to the brain.
