Past Tense Progressive:

We use the Past Progressive to talk about actions that were in progress in past. Use ´Yes, I/he/she/it was´ or ´No, I/he/she/it wasn´t (was not).´and ´Yes, you/we/they were.´ or ´No, you/we/they weren´t (were not)´for short answers.

Examples:

Was your Dad working yesterday? –Yes, he was.- Were they studying?-No, they weren´t.

We were went skiing to Switzerland last fall We were resting at the cabin when it happening

We were having a cup of hot chocolate when we heard a strange noise

The noise was getting louder when we felt the cabin moved a little

I realized what was happening A few minutes later, was everything very quiet

Some people were crying for help while others were trying to rescue them

We felt very lucky because were nothing happened to us.

We were coming home

Past Progressive Tense Interrupted Actions:

We can use the Past Progressive to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted. The interruption is usually a shorter action in the Simple Past.

Examples:

Greg was watching TV when I called. While I was calling Mark the light went out.

Edith was kissing her boyfriend when her father entered to the house and told her off.

Belen and Luis were copying the homework when the teacher entered the classroom!

Giselth was giving the class when her cellphone rang and everybody started to laugh

Eddy was watching a horror movie on tv when the lights went off

Gaby was talking about Lupita when she arrived and said "What were you saying about me? I Heard you!"

We were discussing the project when Mr. Harold came in.

I was reading the book when Juan started run.

Past Tense Parallel Actions:

When we use the Past Progressive with two actions in the same sentence, it expresses the idea that both actions were happening at the same time. The actions are parallel.

Example:

I was reading while they were talking. They were talking and having a good time.

Tim was reading while Jason was listening to music
