A Confession to Make

The story of the Crucible is full of mysteries and intrigues with the character John Proctor. At the beginning of the play he starts with a different attitude and a perception of the truth, but whiles the play continuous John Proctor starts to change and his beliefs .

The only thing that John Proctor really cares about is his lovely family. Moreover, after a big mistake all his life became a hell. He has to hide it from everyone and that is killing him because, he characterizes from being a person that what the truth over and, he knows that if he confesses his family will never forgive him.

That big mistake that is killing John Proctor is his affair with Abigail, a girl from the town. He knows that the mistake is not only going to have consequences on him, it is also going to have consequences on his wife Elisabeth and he will not admit it.

John Proctor tears up the confession because he loves his wife more than everything. In addition, he thinks that if he confess not only his affair with Abigail, he also have to confess something that is not truth, that he saw witches, that they do really exist.

He only does that because he had no peace with himself, he had not forgive himself from the adultery committed with Abigail. He decided to sign the confession in order to save his own life, and be with Elisabeth in order to make everything better and to redeem with her for his sin. But when the judge said that the letter will be at the entrance of the church, he took the paper and trash it; he said that God knows all his sins more than everyone, that they cannot give to the people his name because they will know that he is a sinner and know how black his sins are; he begs to leave him his name, his dignity.

He knows that a morally righteous person will never confess something that is not true that he will die but, with honor because he knows that everything that he have done is for the good of the town for the good of everyone. He knows that a morally righteous person will say the truth over all and accept the consequences of his acts with dignity.

When he analyze the situation and he realized that that was not correct and that the judge won't do that because he said that all the town must know the truth, he broke the paper and decided to be hanged with the rope. When he does that he save d the town somehow, because at being executed as a witch he exposed the injustices and lies, and everyone knew that John Proctor was a good person a person of God; the people will said, why John Proctor was executed he was never a witch, that it was a madness.

Rebecca Nurse's reaction to that confession was of disappointment because she cannot believed that a man like John Proctor, an honor man that always want the truth over all and always speak for injustices can say that he was a Devil servant.

She has always admired John Proctor,
