A) FORMA

Tiempo Presente : MODAL+INFINITIF You can go.

Tiempo Pasado: MODAL+HAVE+PAST PARTICIPLE You could have gone.

NOTA: 1)En la 3ra.persona del singular no cambian. He/She/It can go.

2) Los verbos modales no tienen Infinitivo.

B) PERMISSION

CAN,COULD y MAY se emplean para hablar sobre permiso.

a) CAN

CAN I go? (Asking for permission) (Puedo ir?)

He CAN go to the cinema (Giving permission) (Puede ir al cine)

b) COULD

COULD I borrow some money? (Podría pedir prestado algo de dinero?) (Asking for permission)Forma más educada que diciéndolo con "Can".

She said that I COULD go to the party.(Reporting permission) (Dijo que PODIA ir a la fiesta)

c) MAY

MAY I leave class early today? (Asking for permission)( Hoy PUEDO irme de clase temprano?)

Manera más formal de pedir permiso.

C) PROHIBITION

CAN'T ,COULDN'T,MUSN'T y MAY NOT se usan para prohibir.

a) CAN´T

He CAN'T go to a nightclub .He's too young. (No PUEDE ir a un club nocturno.Es muy joven.)

b) COULDN'T

He said I COULDN'T use it.(Dijo que no PODIA usarlo) Rechazó el permiso.

c) MUSN'T

You MUSN'T smoke in the library! (Orden directa) No DEBEN fumar en la biblioteca= NO ESTA PERMITIDO fumar en la biblioteca.

d) MAY NOT

Students MAY NOT leave the room during the exam.(Prohibition) Los estudiantes NO PUEDEN salir del salón durante el examen.

D) OBLIGATION AND NECESSITY

A) MUST-MUSN'T para expresar FUERTE OBLIGACION O NECESIDAD.

I MUST phone her immediately.(DEBO hablarle inmediatamente)Lo debo hacer porque siento que es absolutamente necesario.

You MUSN'T forget your keys.(NO DEBES olvidar tus llaves)= Tener la obligación de NO hacer algo.

B) SHOULD-SHOULDN'T /OUGTH TO-OUGTH NOT para expresar una obligación no tan fuerte o para indicar el deber o responsabilidad de hacer algo.

You SHOULD/OUGTH TO phone and let them to know that you will be late.(DEBERIAS/TENDRIAS QUE lamar por teléfono y hacerles saber que llegarás tarde.)

E) LACK OF OOBLIGATION OR NECESSITY (Falta de necesidad u obligación)

NEED

You NEEDN'T wash those dishes.(No NECESITABAS lavar esos platos)=No era necesario que lo hicieras.No tenías por qué lavarlos.

ATENCION: El verbo NEED puede ser un verbo ordinario o un verbo modal.Cuando es ordinario su forma negativa es DONT/DOES NOT NEED "TO" +Infinitif. Y cuando es modal es NEED NOT(NEEDN'T) + Infinitif (sin "to").

La oración anterior se puede construir con la forma negativa del verbo ordinario y su sentido no cambia.

You DON'T NEED TO wash those dishes.

F) ADVICE AND RECOMMENDATION(Consejo y recomendación)

SHOULD/SHOULDN'T or OUGTH NOT TO + Infinitif .

You SHOULD see this film.(DEBERIAS ver esta película)(Recomendación)

You SHOULDN'T or OUGHT NOT TO go to work today.(NO DEBERIAS ir a trabajar hoy)(Consejo)
