“The Wood” by E.M Forster

E.M. Forster’s “The Wood”, makes allusion to building an empire since it shows the evolution of human beings’ desires in everything even in things as simple as our properties. It starts with a little feeling and as time passes it starts growing, the same way an empire does. According to Forster, as more belongs you have, there are certain effect on our emotions, personalities, and basically every aspect that is involved in our lives. He starts by saying, that possessions “produces men of weight”, meaning that as more properties we have the less we are able to move and advance. The second aspect he mentions is that when we acquire something the feeling never stops and we always want more. The third aspect is that as we gain properties, we want to improve them each time and make it better than our neighbors. A sort of competition with ourselves to demonstrate our superiority compared to others. Finally, the last aspect in which we convert our obsession of our possessions is that we want all for ourselves and we wish not to share it with anyone. In my opinion, the building of an empire becomes so material and carnal as we desire to have more and more each time we gain goods.
