Culture Geek

Is a term used to refer to the person fascinated by technology and computing.

The development-and the exact meaning of the term-is not the same in all areas, and cultures, although it has kept the meaning of geek.

Before 1990 was rather pejorative connotation. While today it is not, the first versions of the term defined a computer geek with some of the concepts that could encompass in: a nerd, a loser or an asocial loser; without success and with little personality. In fact, according Jargon File, remain still considered so by non-geeks.

But as the dominant culture has become more dependent on technology and the technical, traditional views have had to assume a grudging respect towards the new geeks. In particular, this is so to the point that today there is also Geek Pride Day, an implicit reference to Gay Pride Day as evidence of a social claim social after years of abuse.

Individual geek

Geek commonly understood as a person who prefers the concentration, dedication to their interests, work or hobbies which are usually technical in nature, or rather technological and imagination rather than understood perhaps other common issues, such as may be looking for a certain degree of social acceptance, or at least unconventional social acceptance. In this sense, the concept referred to the term "nerd" is shared by geek. It is understood that a person does not really matter geek degree of extravagance that comes with time invested in learning and skills.

The social connotations of these features lead to the term geek beyond a simple definition to make it a lifestyle which, usually, the subject tends to be proud, something that, again, again the same as the nerd. The geek's passion for learning new skills makes them likely to accept and defend free software policies, either by mere altruism or individual inclination. Although this is not always the case, often tend towards collaborative practices that allow them to involve others in their personal achievements for the sake of knowledge sharing.
