Cinema as a source for education

By Sara

Nowadays more are more students are in the need of going to the cinema. Although I believe cinema has a big influence on the attitudes and beliefs, aesthetic tastes and feelings, mass consciousness of millions of people, I am strongly opposed to the idea that supports that cinema can’t help you learn to debate and think critically, particularly at the moment of being in a discussion.

It has been proved that movies help students to introduce film as not just a form of passive entertainment, if not as a powerfully active learning tool in the educational process. Firstly, all of this translates into emotions, which can inspire actions. Therefore, by its usage students develop a more holistic comprehension of facts such as what happens in educational films. Secondly, discuss big ideas like citizenship and social responsibility; thus, at the time using the most universal kind of language and images. Moreover, aural and visual learning can stir up curiosity in students.

In addition, students will certainly find it more enjoyable. A first good reason is that cinema has many funny films with educational contents, due to the fact that it makes an explanation more vivid and real; especially because it uses actual facts and special effects. Furthermore, it increases motivation and interest since you can learn more languages. For example, students that are studying other languages and they want to have some audio practice.

On the other hand, some movies are not allowed to young people because of their content. Take into consideration bad words, violence or cruelty and because of it teachers and parents need to select properly what students want to watch. For instance, parents and children can spend an evening watching a familiar movie selected by their parents. Moreover, without supervision they could select an inappropriate movie. Thus, movies would become more like a game than useful.

In conclusion, I think that cinema should attract a greater number of students, all of whom should find values in the films beyond just pure entertainment. However, the figure of the teachers and the parents should certainly remain within the students.
