Dear Rockwell Automation Customer,

The purpose of this Product Safety Alert is to inform you of a potential safety issue that exists with:

• XM-160/161/162 Overall Vibration Modules (part numbers listed above), Firmware Revision 5.020, and Relay 1 of the XM-441 Expansion Relay Module (1440-REX00-04RD). The issue exists only when the XM-441 is used to provide physical relays to an XM-160/161/162 module. Modules affected were shipped April 2006 to May 2006.

This Alert explains the potential safety issue and the steps being taken to rectify the situation.

- Issue Description –

With the XM-160/161/162, Firmware Version 5.020, hereafter referred to as Overall Vibration modules, the following potential safety issue exists:

Safety Issue – The Overall Vibration modules do not actuate relay number 1 of the XM-441 Expansion Relay module. Depending on the application of relay number 1, this may result in a failure of the module to protect the monitored machine or process.

This condition may exist in systems where the Overall Vibration module is connected to an XM-441 Expansion Relay module and relay number 1 is enabled. When the relay is configured to be failsafe (normally energized), the relay fails to energize. When the relay is configured to be non-failsafe (normally de-energized), the relay fails to energize when the alarm condition exists on the system. To avoid this problem, do not use Relay 1. Relays 2 thru 8 (if you have two XM-441 modules connected to the Overall Vibration module) function correctly.

To duplicate the anomaly, proceed as follows:

1. Connect an XM-441 to an Overall Vibration module and apply power to the Overall Vibration module.

2. Start the XM Serial Configuration Utility program. Click Start and then select Programs > Entek > Serial Config Utility from the Start menu.

3. Connect the computer to the Overall Vibration module using the special serial cable (A-B Cat. No. 1440-SCDB9FXM2).

4. Click Configure in the main Serial Configuration Utility program window. The Configuration Tool for the connected module appears.

5. Click the Alarm, Relay, and 4-20 mA Output tab and set the Overall Vibration relay parameter to Relay 1.

6. Check the Failsafe (normally energized) check box.

7. Download the configuration (Device > Download to Device) to the Overall Vibration module.

8. Notice Relay 1 fails to energize.

-Temporary Workarounds –

To avoid the anomaly, configure the Overall Vibration module to use any XM-441 relay except relay 1.

WARNING: Wiring changes should never be made while the module is powered.

- Product Identification –

Product affected by this Mandatory Product Safety Alert includes the XM-160/161/162 Overall Vibration modules with the following series and firmware revision:

• 1440-VDRS06-00RH, XM-160 Overall Vibration Module, Firmware Revision 5.020

• 1440-VDRS06-06RH, XM-161 Overall Vibration Module, Firmware Revision 5.020

• 1440-VDRP06-00RH, XM-162 Overall Vibration Module, Firmware Revision 5.020

You can determine the revision number of the firmware using the XM Serial Configuration Utility and the special serial cable (A-B Cat. No. 1440-SCDB9FXM2). The XM Serial Configuration Utility is provided on the XM Documentation and Configuration Utility CD (version 5.0 or later) that is packaged with the Overall Vibration modules or it can be down-loaded from the XM Firmware Update page at http://www.rockwellautomation.com/support/xm/.

To check the firmware revision number, proceed as follows:

1. Make certain you have installed the XM Serial Configuration Utility onto the computer that will be connected directly to the Overall Vibration module. Refer to the XM-16X Overall Vibration Modules Installation Instructions for assistance.

2. Start the XM Serial Configuration Utility program. Click Start and then select Programs > Entek > Serial Config Utility from the Start menu.

3. Make sure you have selected the correct COM port (where the serial cable is connected to the computer) in the main Serial Configuration Utility program window and the Overall Vibration module has power applied to it.

4. Connect
