CARTAGENA DE INDIAS

Cartagena or Cartagena de Indias, is a city on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region and capital of the Bolívar Department. The port city had a population of 892,545 on the 2005 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Colombia and the second largest in the region, after Barranquilla. The Cartagena urban area is also the fifth-largest urban area in the country. Economic activities include maritime and petrochemicals industry, as well as tourism. Cartagena has a pleasant warm climate that ranges from 28 º C (82 º F) and 30 º C (86 º F)

The city was founded on June 1, 1533, and named after Cartagena, Spain. However, settlement in this region around Cartagena Bay by various indigenous people dates back to 4000 BC. During the colonial period Cartagena served a key role in administration and expansion of the Spanish empire. It was a center of political and economic activity due to the presence of royalty and wealthy viceroys. Cartagena is the city most associated with pirates in the Caribbean, and the world. In 1984 Cartagena's colonial walled city and fortress were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Cartagena is a magical city, surrounded by walls that tell stories, amazing stories of pirates and brutal disputes gave freedom to "heroic " . Visitors can find many options to enjoy its beautiful architecture, monuments, churches and parks.

It is pleasant to walk the streets and see the buildings, the Palace of the Inquisition, the Clock Tower, the bastions and the Castle of San Felipe de Barajas. Museums, cathedrals, colonial houses, water sports and incredible beaches are some of the attractions of this city and its surroundings .

Cartagena delivers a unique experience in a wonderful setting that evokes the history and the past, in addition to the romance of those times that were seared into their stone paths and walls.

The architecture is very rich and beautiful. There you can visit the Getsemani Neighborhood, the convent of the stern, the islands of the Rosary, the historical center

The most representative species are the Sterculia apetala ( Camajorú ) , Bursera simaruba ( Indian leather ) , there is also a variety of animals from the Caribbean region, as are the colored howler monkeys, sloths, bats, foxes, wild rabbits, squirrels, birds, iguanas, lizards, snakes, insects and other invertebrates as well as the bird section of the city that is the Mariamulata ( Quiscalus mexicanus) a site to visit the Botanical Garden.

If you come to my city you should bring summer clothes and comfortable shoes because the weather is very hot sometimes and not for the world you can forget the bathing suit
