1. What is graphic expression?

He doesn’t know a formal definition but as we asked he said that he would dare to say that graphic expression corresponds to a tecnic in which one you can make a scheme, diagram or a draw in which one we pretend to show the characteristics of an object, an space in reference of its physical and chemistries properties. In general, he could say that graphic expression means to show in a draw the characteristics of something you are intending to show. He believes that it probably won’t cover the entire concept of what it is in its totality graphic expression, because he considers that the term it’s pretty wide; besides, he could say that in terms of civil engineering and graphic expression they would use it to make sanitary planes for a building for example, or an electric net, planes for a parking lot, accesses, of constructive characteristics, etc.

2. Do you think it should be taught as a subject nowadays? Why?

He says that, in fact, it should be taught, because in that way, we would go straight to the practice of the engineering, since, sooner or later, we will be developing in the professional field, in constant touch with all kind of sketches that show highly important information for the development of work. Then, for example, who works in logistics would have contact with planes about merchancy, shelves, highness, a plant and the ubication of machinery. So, it will always be contact with information which would have as a pre requisite knowledge of graphic expression, that’s why under his judge, every engineer must study the subject.

3. Do you think it has been useful for your career?

He said that’s for sure and in so many occasions, in 20 years of professional practice he have had to use tools of graphic expression for different reasons, lately he worked in the design of a store and he had to make different planes, which were extremely useful to implement the store.

4. Do you think any of these subjects are useless for the profession?

His point of view is that college formation it’s general, basic and it must achieve as many subjects as possible. Later, every professional, based in its specialty, he could use the knowledge that the subject contributed in higher or lower grades.

5. Were you taught to use AutoCAD and SolidWorks in the subject? Do you know how to use it? Do you consider that is good to learn how to use it and why?

In his epoch, when he learned graphic expression, at the moment it was called engineering draw, in 1989, he didn’t learn about softwares, since it wasn’t diffuse and it wasn’t known. For him the elaboration of the plane was purely physical, there was no printers, what we call now “Plotter”, he had to hire an draftsman from architecture so it would be done freehand. Plus, with the time being things got easier with AutoCAD, which he considers way more safe and practical, planes wouldn’t have to be in paper but in a digital medium, what makes things more flexible when you have to correct any mistakes or just to change anything. He admitted that in these day he have had to visualize planes in digital formats, made by AutoCAD; he doesn’t handles the tool but he does can interpret the information content in the files.
