RIO DE JANEIRO

Rio is the capital of the Rio de Janeiro state, it is located at Brazil’s southeast. It was the capital when the country got independent from Portugal in 1822, and it is the second most populated city of the nation.

We are going to explain some main aspects about culture, religion, sports and tourism in Rio

Culture:

The carnival is an annual celebration that takes place between february and march, it has an European influence especially from Portugal and it is closely related with the catholic religion. During the carnival you can see lots of people wearing costumes singing, dancing and walking down the streets.

The celebration takes place in Rio and Sao Paulo, places where you can find many samba schools. It is important to notice, that samba is the main musical gender of Brazil and it is one of the biggest musical success that shows how Brazilians dance and have fun.

If you travel around the world you would find a lot of places where samba is played for dj´s and people get really excited trying to dance like Brazilians especially women do.

Religion:

Rio de Janeiro is a religious diverse city, the Judaism account for the 0.05% of the Brazilian population, which is concentrated in Sao Paulo and Rio. However, it is a fact that the main religion is the catholic, which has the 74% of the whole country.

It is quite common as well to find some atheist people and some santeria especially where indigenous people live, that is a similar characteristic around South America too.

Sports:

It is globally famous that the best soccer in the world is played in Brazil and some of the best local teams play in Rio.

The official teams from Rio are Botafogo, Flamengo, Vasco da Gama, Fluminense and Duque de Caxias. The most important match in the city is played by Flamengo and Vasco da Gama, it is also important to know that Flamengo is the most popular team in Brazil.

One of the most relevant players in the world was Ronaldo Nazario de Lima, globally known as Ronaldo. He is from Rio and used to play in many European teams for example Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Inter and Milan and his last team was Corinthians in Brazil when he got retired in 2012.

Ronaldo has a record in world cups because he scored 15 goals and he is in the first position even above of many really famous soccer players around the world.

In 2014, Brazil is going to hold the soccer world cup and the Olympic Games and one of the locations will be Rio. For this, the Rio stadium and its infrastructure are being restructured to be ready for a global competition. We are sure it would be really fun to be there next year. To be honest it would be an honour to be in Brazil, however, prices are getting higher and it is so expensive to find tickets and stuff to enjoy every competition and match that will be there.

On the other hand, Capoeira is a well-known martial art in the country; it has been practiced in Colombia as well since many years ago. It is kind of dancing and fighting that needs a lot of practice and discipline.

Tourism:

“Cristo de Corcovado” or “Cristo Redentor” (in Spanish) is a 38 meters statue of Jesus, which has open arms and it is on top of a really big mountain.

It is located 709 meters over see level at the National Park “La Tijuca”. It was inaugurated the 12 of October 1931 and it is recognized as one of the new seven marvels in the world. It is common to find people from every place in the world taking photos with it behind them.

Beaches in Rio are legendary as well. For tourists, Brazilian women are one of the beauties to see when they visit the country and the city of Rio. So if you want to see beautiful
