SUMMARY VIDEOS “Language Acquisition Theory” By Stephen Krashen.
Part 1:
The main idea in this first part of the video Dr Krashen talk about the Acquistion learning hypothesis, this hypothesis says that there are the acquisition of language and the learning of the language. The acquisition is a subconcious process that can happens for example when you are Reading a book, listening a presentation without know that you are maybe acquiring the language, he also says that the language acquisition device never shut off. In the other hand there is the learning that is knowing about the language and this is a concious process. And important disctintion that Krashen makes of this two conceps are: acquisiton give us fluenty, learning give us accuracy, but te most important is the acquisition because this process gives fluenty and accuracy.
Part 1:
In this second part of the video Dr Krashen says that we all acquire the language in the same way and this happens for example when we understand the message that a person is saying to us in another language or when we are Reading something in another language, this is when the acqusition take place and the acquisition process is something that you can’t avoid because the Language Acquisition device goes to work.
Something that has to do with a comprehensible input is the speaking that is something that occurs as a result of acquire the language not as a cause because when an adultoor children receive comprehensible input afer a couple of month they will star to talk and that time that they have when are receiving the input until they star to talk is what is called the Silence Period.
Part 3
In this part of the presentation of Language Acquisition Theory, Dr Krashen talk about the Affective Filter Hypothesis, the variables in this hypothesis that counts in the language acquisition (LA) are the motivation, this counts in language acquisition because student that are motivated do better in language acquisition, the self steem also take part in the affective filter to get the language acquisition, the anxiety is also a factor that influence in the language acquisition because the lower is the anxiety the acquisition is better because the pressure in the LA has to be off enterely thats why if the student is not motivated, if he/her doesn’t have self steem and the anxiety isn’t off it will occur a block which is not going to permit that the acquisition happens.
Part 4:
Dr Krashen summarize at the beginning of the video what he previosly said about acquiring a language which happens in one way that is getting comprehensible input in a low anxiety situation. Also he says that even when some people think that they don’t need language clases because the best way to learn the language is to go to the country where that language is spoken that is a mistake because the best way to get comprehensible input is in the language clases for the begginers and one that you get that comprehensible input in the clases now you can go to the country for example mexico to learn spanish or france to learn french etc, to get more comprehensible input from the outside world.
Part 5:
In this last part of the presentation Krashen talk about how methods like the natural approach, total physical response, suggestopia, provides comprehensible input but even that they are good it’s not enough because not bring the student to the point that is use the language to the outside in academic situation.
The last thing that the Dr Krashen talk about is the two difficulties that there are in the language acquisition, one are the students and the other are the teachers, because the students in a language clases expects gramar, vocabulary list and exercises and when they don’t see that, most of the time they think he or she is a incompetent teacher, The goal of the teacher is teach to the students
