Brazil elects its first female president

Voters in Brazil have chosen the governing Workers’ Party candidate, Dilma Rousseff, to be their new president. Ms Rousseff won 56% of the vote in the run-off, beating her rival, the Social Democrat Jose Serra.

She was a schoolgirl when Brazil fell under military dictatorship in 1964, later becoming a key player in a militant group resisting the dictatorship, for which she was arrested and tortured.

A career civil servant, Rousseff became energy minister when Lula da Silva took office in 2002.

In 2005, after a corruption scandal brought down key government figures, Lula da Silva made her his chief of staff, a post she held until March 2010, when she launchedhercampaign for the presidency as the Workers’ Party candidate. With Lula’s 80% approval ratings behind her, few doubted her chances of success despite an uninspiring campaign.

Tourists still missing after typhoon in Taiwan

The typhoon has left Taiwan, but the number of people dead is just beginning to rise. The 19 tourists, their tour guide and driver are believed to have been travelling on a coastal highway, when rockslides and heavy rain caused portions of the road to collapse.

More than 200 search and rescue workers continue to comb a steep mountainside and rocky coastal area for signs of the bus and its occupants. They are searching on foot, from helicopters and in vessels in the sea. In addition to the Chinese tourists, four other people are also missing since Thursday, including a driver and tour guide from another bus that plunged down the side of the highway. Taiwanese officials said they will not give up any chance of finding survivors. Relatives of the Chinese tourists will be arriving from China later on Monday.
