Morgan Spurlock directed and starred an American independent film named Super-Size Me. Spurlock´s film follows a 30- day period from February 1st to March 2nd, 2003 in which he only ate food from McDonald´s.

  1. Read a summary about the first part of the documentary Super-Size Me (the experiment) and look for the documentary video in Internet and watch it.

Super-Size Me (The experiment)

As the film begins Spurlock, whose fitness is above the average according to his personal trainer, is examined by three doctors, as well as a nutritionist and a personal trainer.  All of the health professionals predict the McDiet will have unwelcomed effects on his body, but none expected anything too drastic, even when one of the practitioners mentions that the human body is extremely adaptable.

On February 1st, Spurlock starts the moth having breakfast near his home in Manhattan, where there is an average of four McDonald´s locations per square mile (2.6 km2). He walks 5000 steps every day, which is the average an American walks each day (approximately two miles), because he aims to keep fit.

Spurlock has specific rules governing his new eating habitats:

  • He must fully eat three McDonald´s meals per day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • He must consume every item on the McDonald´s menu at least once over the course of the 30 days (he managed this is the nine days).
  • He must only ingest items that are offered on the McDonald’s menu, including bottled water. All food coming from a different source is prohibited.
  • He must Super-Size Me the meal when offered, but only when offered (i.e., he in not able to Super-Size by his own will).
  • He will attempt to walk about as much typical U.S citizen, based on a suggested figure of 5000 standardized distance steps per day, but the did not closely adhere to this, as he walked more while in New York than while in Houston.

Day 2 brings Spurlock´s first (of nine) Super-Size meal, at the McDonald´s on 34th Street and Tenth Avenue, which happens to be a meal made of a Double Quarter Pounder with Chesses, Super-Size French fries , and a 42 ounce Coke, which takes 22 minutes to eat. He experiences steadily increasing stomach discomfort during the process, and vomits in the McDonald´s parking lot.
