We’re happy there’s a John Hennessey who walks the Earth. While any number of humans may have had the idea of marrying a stretched Lotus with a twin-turbocharged ZR1 engine, only Hennessey had the wherewithal to make the Venom GT. And because he has, we bring you the news that the Venom GT has officially broken the official world record for a car traveling from 0 to 300 kilometers per hour.

The deed was done on January 10th and officially certified by Go Official World Records. Conducted at Ellington Airport near Houston, Texas, the certified time of 13.63 seconds is actually the average of two separate runs going the opposite direction. The first run, with a 4-mile-per-hour tailwind, was achieved in 13.18 seconds, and the second, with a 6-mph headwind, happened in 14.08 seconds.

OWR only recognizes deeds done in kilometers per hour, but you may be interested to know that the 1,244-horsepower Venom GT also reached 200 mph on that day in a record 14.51 seconds. According to Hennessey, the previous record for that achievement was 17.68 seconds by the Koenigsegg Agera R and the 1,200-hp Bugatti Veyron Sport requires a positively glacial 22.2 seconds.

There are more numerically significant accomplishments in Hennessey’s press release below, but what you’ll really want to do is check out the video replay, as well as flip through these photo galleries of the world record run and glamour shots of the car in question.

Encino, California. Ron Sarchian started thinking on break a World Record after turning 40 years despite as a child he loved reading the World Record books. Jabs coming one after the other, Sarchian hoped to get back the record, so when he was 47 hours he said he was not ready to quit, he wanted to keep going and was feeling great.

He reached is goal and finally stopped at 50 hours and 9 minutes holding back the record. Ron Sarchian whose father died at 33 and was raised by his mother, is an actor, stuntman, and recognised trainer. He had already held the achievement for longevity at the punching bag once before, when he set a 36 hours and 3 minutes record in 2004. That record was broken in 2010, when Tom Varley beat the bag for 38 hours straight in South Africa. Another man, Eurnie Devenney, also attempted to beat that hitting the bag for 48 hours and 42 minutes. Sarchian said he would try to beat 48 hours, using his 48th birthday as a numeric goal, and then surpassed that.

During a five minute break, which the officials allow after each 60 minutes, Sarchian doffed off his boxing gloves to expose reddened, raw knuckles. He used the restroom, then wolfed down a burrito and gulped some soda while working his legs on a stationary bike to keep his muscles warm. Then it was back to the bag where he picked up the punching rhythm. His friends and supporters watched on in admiration.

“He has unbelievable endurance and mental strength” said his friend Brock Ruess, who owns Premier Fitness. “I worked with him back in 2004 and when he said he wanted to this, I was like, again? That first time blew my mind. But I’ve never doubted him”.

Fran Thurm trains with Sarchian and said she admired his commitment to causes. Sarchian also participated in a 24-hour Ride to Cure Cancer in 2010 to raise 10.000$, also for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. “I think it’s incredible he has the strenght and will to do this”, Thurm said.

Stuntman Gene LeBell, a fixture in the mixed martial arts world, called his friend Sarchian a great talent and a good person. “He’s a world class stuntman, but his life’s goal is to help people live longer”, LeBell said.

As in the past attempts, Sarchian’s punch-a-thon was captured on video with witnesses on hand. In addition to his 2004 punch-a-thon, he recorded the most full contact punch strikes in 2005, most full contact kicks in one hour in 2006, and most martial arts roundhouse kicks in one minute in 2007. In many of those attempts, he raised money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. This year, he’s also using the event to raise funds for the Mike Utley Foundation. Utley was an offensive right guard for the Detroit Lions who was paralyzed during an NFL game on November 17, 1991. The foundation raises money for research, rehabilitation, and education for spinal cord injuries.

An angler has smashed the world record for the biggest halibut fish ever caught on rod and line.

The enormous flat fish tipped the scales at a whopping 37 stones – heavier than a wild gorilla.

It was caught by Marco Liebenow who jokingly thought he had hooked into a submarine when the monster halibut took his bait.

After taking 90 minutes reeling it towards the surface Marco and two friends tied a rope around the tail of the 9ft long fish and towed it back to shore where it was weighed at 513lbs

After taking 90 minutes reeling it towards the surface, the 9ft long fish was too big to haul onboard his small boat in Norway

So he and three friends tied a rope around its tail and towed it back to shore where it had to be hoisted on to the quayside by a crane.

It weighed in at 513lbs, easily beating the existing record of 419lbs for an Atlantic halibut as recognised by the International Game Fishing Association.

Marco, who is in his 30s and from Germany, has now submitted a claim to the IGFA and is awaiting confirmation.

Marco Liebenow joked he had hooked into a submarine when the monster halibut took his bait

David Bottcher, of the angling tour company Angelreisen Hamburg that organised to fishing trip to Kjollefjord, Norway, said: ‘David does not speak any English but has said it was a wonderful feeling to catch it and has called it a fish of a lifetime.

‘When he first hooked it it felt like he has caught a submarine because it was so big.

‘It took four men to bring it towards their 19ft boat and then they could only put a sling around its tail and pull it back to the harbour.

‘Marco was elated afterwards and celebrated with the boat skipper and their housekeeper by having a few beers.

‘Before he left for the trip, he called us first to ask for a few hints about how and where to fish – I guess our advice paid off.

Is this the world's longest hair?

Dai Yueqin's hair is 4.2 metres long

A woman has shown off her long hair - which measures a whopping 4.2 metres.

Forty-year-old Dai Yueqin, who was born in China but lives in the USA, has not cut her hair since she was 14.

She revealed her massive mane when she visited her hometown of Tong Xiang in eastern China. But her hair-raising barnet is not a record-breaker.

The Guinness World Record is held by Hoo Sateow from Thailand. His hair was 5.15 metres long, as he'd star ted growing it in 1929.

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) — Michael Phelps is predicting the long world record drought in swimming will come to an end this month at the world championships in Shanghai, and he is best qualified to know.

The 26-year-old has dominated swimming recently, winning eight of his 14 Olympic gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, and is competing in up to seven events at the world championships.

Swimming's world record drought has reached 18 months in the Olympic-size 50-meter pool since the ban on rubberized suits at the beginning of 2010.

"People just want it more now. We're going to see faster swimming than we've really ever seen," Phelps said after a training session Friday at Southport on Australia's Gold Coast, where the U.S. team is preparing for the championships. "There are going to be a lot faster swims than even the Olympics or the world swimming championships in '09 — even with the 'suits' we have now."

An incredible 43 world records were set at the world championships in Rome two years ago, including Phelps' marks in the butterfly and 400 medley, and overall between 2008 and 2009 — the rubberized suit era — there were more than 200 records set over long- and short-course.

Many swimmers and coaches thought after the suits were banned last year that it would take a decade before the records start tumbling again. Men are now only allowed to wear textile suits from the waist to the knees and women are restricted to suits that stretch from the shoulders to the knees.

Phelps, a critic of the old buoyant suits, said swimmers were paying more attention to fine detail and were getting into better physical shape now.

"You see people doing stuff now both in and out of the pool that are allowing them — and preparing themselves better — to work on the small things that really end up making a big difference," he said. "There are a lot of people swimming faster now than they did in the suit. A lot of newer names that are swimming fast."

Phelps said it wasn't a matter of if but which records would be broken.

He holds the records in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly, and the 400 individual medley. He's swimming the 100 and 200 fly, the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle in Shanghai, where the swimming program gets underway July 24.

Phelps is coming off eight months of intensive training which followed about 18 months when he was "in a funk," and not overly dedicated to training. So he's not sure if he'll be setting any new marks.

"I would love to break a world record. I would love to do a best time," he said. "I'm just going in and just put it out there. I've done as much work as I could in the time ... it's time to get up and race now."

Phelps had the aura of invincibility during his dominating run, but let it slip because he said he went through a stage when he couldn't be bothered with training.

Last month at Santa Clara, he lost for the third straight time in one of his signature events, finishing one-hundredth of a second behind Australia's Nick D'Arcy in the 200-meter butterfly. That came on top of two losses to China's Wu Peng after almost nine years without losing a 200 fly.

"There are always things that I want to do and hold. One of the things I wanted to hold was to not lose a 200 fly for the rest of my career," he said. "We all know this year that hasn't really gone as planned.

"It shows everybody is human. It came pretty hard and it didn't feel very good," he added. "It's all going to come back if I do what I need to do in the pool. You guys know, I don't like to lose."

Phelps said he was in much better shape than he was last year and had started to get the kind of feeling back that he had before the Beijing Olympics and 2009 World Championships.

"This is like a pre-Olympic meet. Really shows you how everybody else is preparing and what you need to do," he said. "I'm excited. Looking forward to seeing how everything is going to go."
